This is a scary story indeed. I also think VictoriaP's advice is the best, although I myself would find it extremely difficult to keep calm under such circumstances.

It's also food for thought for the future. I have tried to avoid buying digital content that I could not liberate, but it's harder to do in some instances. I'm thinking about all the stuff on my iPad, for instance, and I'm a bit scared. Although I don't think Apple has a history of wiping out stuff from customer's devices, they could do it I'm sure, and with the apps I would also lose my content (created by me). A reminder to make device-independent backups regularly.

I do hope you manage to sort this out with Amazon.

I THINK I found a HIGHLY possible reason as to why I was banned.

I logged onto the e-mail account of the amazon account I closed myself about a year ago and sent a message to this "amazon specialist" if they could reopen the account.

Here is the process you need to follow when closing an account: http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custom...?nodeId=565164

I followed this step back in 2011, and got a confirmation from a regular customer service agent that my account was closed.

However, after e-mailing the account specialist, I got the same e-mail that this account was linked to an account with previous abuse. WTF? I think closing the account by myself flagged my account as closed by amazon, thus by abuse.

Or, both your accounts have been incorrectly linked to a third account that was closed for abuse.

You keep coming back to your closing the account as the reason for this, but that doesn't seem likely to me, and nothing I have seen in Amazon's communications points to this.

What you need is to get information from Amazon on which account triggered their abuse alarm, and why. As pdurrant says, it's not necessarily one of your accounts but it could be another that was incorrectly linked to yours. Don't jump to conclusions, and don't give up asking them until they answer this.

Amazon are not giving the OP a reason why he has been shut down AND they are not allowing him to retrieve content he has paid for. Outrageous.

Thank you for your responses --

Amazon is not giving information about the "linked account" as it violates their privacy policy. This means that I cannot verify that the account is actually mine and not someone else's. They are also not giving me what the "abuse" was, as it "violates their privacy policy."

They have also refused to respond to my e-mails for some reason (I have not gotten a response back in 20 hours or so).

However, I have asked in the account I closed myself if it is possible to maybe reopen an account since this account was closed by myself.

I still get the feeling the account I closed myself was flagged mistakenly as the "abuse account"

Your purchased content on this closed account became unusable in March 2011 (as you have since found out, you have no access to anything on a closed account).

Either we are not getting the whole story or Amazon has mistakenly linked a banned email address to you.

If you legitimately believe that you were banned in error, send a short email with all the facts (including all the email addresses you used) to Jeff Bezos (his email address is on the web).

Someone from his executive team will read the email and MAY decide to look into it. I took this route when the CS solution to my problem was useless and I received a remedy to my satisfaction from the executive team.

This kind of thing would drive me nuts, you seem to take this much more calmly than I would!

Anyway, I still think VictoriaP's advice to keep asking, listing the history of your accounts and asking which of these and which action triggered the closing, is the right one.

I agree. I have now heard this story from too many people. Even if the closure is legit on some technical level, treating it like it's a matter of national security is not fair. The affected person needs some recourse.

Indeed. It seems that even if my email address is fraudulently used by a thief, resulting in a ban, I loose all my content and have little recourse.
That's not right (see above) but on a practical level, though I have never had any problem with Amazon, I think'd better clear some room on my NAS and start backing stuff up....

Don't fall for the Grey fallacy. It's very possible that one party can be telling the truth, and truth doesn't shift to the middle just because some one else tells a wild lie.

I'm not saying that's the case here. There may well be a grey area, but it's also possible that one party is telling the truth and the other party is lying.

My son in law was a seller on Amazon and he was selling collections of shareware software.

He had all the permissions to bundle the shareware from the holders of the copyrights as long as he did not alter them in any way and he advertised them as such.

He was doing a really good business and was making quite a lot of money.

Being a workoholic he would bring his laptop to our house whenever he and our daughter brought the grandkids over. Sometimes he would log in on from my computer to check for questions or orders or just maintenance on his account.

Someone complained to Amazon that he was selling pirated software and his account was immediately closed.

The next time I tried to log in to my Amazon account I found it closed as well and received the email from Amazon just like the one the OP posted.

There is some way Amazon can track the IP address or the CPU code from the computer a person logs in from and it seems will cancel the accounts of anyone they can associate with it.

This happened about 6 or 7 years ago but they are probably still doing the same thing and just doesn't tell how they determine whose account they decide to close.

My wife had her own Amazon account and that is the one we use to make purchases today.

Neither she nor I ever had a seller account and we have never returned any products to them.

The bottom line is be very careful of who you allow to access your WIFI or use your computer.

You mean that you're NOT backing up your Amazon books? That's rather unwise. You should never assume that any retailer will retain your books for you indefinitely. ALWAYS back up as soon as you've made a purchase.

Sure, they COULD, but if they DID every library, school, and Internet cafe computer in the world would be blocked.

This is one of the cases where it sounds like there was more going on than is revealed here.

There generally is in these cases. I've never heard of Amazon closing an account without a damned good reason for doing so.
