I'm posting this on the non-fiction thread, but there are fiction titles, too.

They're saying that they are "free for a limited time." So, if you think that you might be interested, don't dilly-dally around.

Be careful: I noticed a book right away, on the webpage cited above, that was not free (it is $0.99). There might be more.

So many ebook bargains, so little time . . . .

This is a book about the Ed Sullivan Show. The reviews say that if you used to watch that show, you will enjoy the book; but if you didn't, the book won't be interesting.

No, it works just like the kindle app or others; once you download it to your device you can read offline.

The Thieves' Opera: The Remarkable Lives and Deaths of Jonathan Wild, Thief-taker and Jack Sheppard, House-breaker by Lucy Moore

Jack Sheppard, burglar and escapologist extraordinaire, and Jonathan Wild, a gang boss who for twelve years convinced the Establishment of his probity, were criminals as famous in their time as Dick Turpin.

Now be taken deep into their world - the gaudy, bawdy, rowdy and dangerous London underworld of the early eighteenth century - and see how in that violent yet oddly intimate society two very different criminals, who brought about each other's downfall, could in the process achieve immortality in the popular imagination.

Lucy Moore was born in 1970. She was brought up and educated in Britain and the United States before reading history at Edinburgh University.

Great Deal on an Ebook for STEM Higher-Education Professionals

A little specialized, and you've got to be willing to take a pdf (or read the book online), but it's a great deal . . . .

From the National Academies Press, a publisher of science and technical books--a free pdf, Reaching Students:
What Research Says About Effective Instruction in Undergraduate Science and Engineering
, by Nancy Kober.

Book Description
The undergraduate years are a turning point in producing scientifically literate citizens and future scientists and engineers. Evidence from research about how students learn science and engineering shows that teaching strategies that motivate and engage students will improve their learning. So how do students best learn science and engineering? Are there ways of thinking that hinder or help their learning process? Which teaching strategies are most effective in developing their knowledge and skills? And how can practitioners apply these strategies to their own courses or suggest new approaches within their departments or institutions? Reaching Students strives to answer these questions.

Reaching Students presents the best thinking to date on teaching and learning undergraduate science and engineering. Focusing on the disciplines of astronomy, biology, chemistry, engineering, geosciences, and physics, this book is an introduction to strategies to try in your classroom or institution. Concrete examples and case studies illustrate how experienced instructors and leaders have applied evidence-based approaches to address student needs, encouraged the use of effective techniques within a department or an institution, and addressed the challenges that arose along the way.

The research-based strategies in
Reaching Students can be adopted or adapted by instructors and leaders in all types of public or private higher education institutions. They are designed to work in introductory and upper-level courses, small and large classes, lectures and labs, and courses for majors and non-majors. And these approaches are feasible for practitioners of all experience levels who are open to incorporating ideas from research and reflecting on their teaching practices. This book is an essential resource for enriching instruction and better educating students.

Get it here. If you wish, you can get this title in paperback, instead, for $39.95. Ack! I'm sure that shipping and maybe other baddies are not included in the price, either. Ack! Ack!

Not just this title, but virtually all of NAPs titles are free as pdfs (5333 titles)! One way to find them is to browse one or more topics and check for any titles under that(those) topic(s) that you may be interested in. I need to peruse the titles again, myself, as it has been quite a while since I did so.

Free is good.

Free again from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon: (linkage for the lot)

High Crimes and Misdemeanors: The Term and Trials of Former Governor Evan Mecham by Ronald J. Watkins (Wikipedia), a political scandal coverage account of the O_o inducing term of the late Arizona governor (Wikipedia), originally out from HarperCollins' William Morrow imprint in 1990.

As previously mentioned, the blurb is a little skimpy, but the Publishers Weekly and Library Journal reviews both give a fairly decent description and also some praise for this.

When a small-town car dealer, more at war with his own political party than the opposition, finally wins office the result is impeachment. Complete with drama and humor this is the definitive account of the state impeachment of an American state governor.

Watkins also offers a bunch of apparently self-published mystery/suspense thrillers, if you're interested.

Free again from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon:

L.A. Secret Police: Inside the LAPD Elite Spy Network by Mike Rothmiller & Ivan G. Goldman is an exposé of Exactly What It Says In The Title, written by one of the cops involved, originally out from Pocket Books in 1992 and updated with a new epilogue essay written by Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist David Cay Johnston (Wikipedia). Rothmiller himself seems to be regularly invited by the media to speak on police-related issues, e.g. this article from last year's (for 2014 values of "last year", since I'm copy-pasting all this from the previous Non-Fiction megathread) ABC 10 News (warning for auto-play video).

This incredible non-fiction book rips the lid off the LAPD and exposes the reader to its dark underbelly of corruption during the reign of Chief Daryl Gates. L.A. cops ruined lives and reputations, inflicted mindless brutality, committed murder and engaged in massive cover-ups. In Los Angeles, police corruption was much more than unmarked envelopes stuffed with cash. It was a total corruption of power. For decades LAPD engaged in massive illegal spying and lied about it. Its spying targets included politicians, movie stars, professional athletes, news reporters and anyone wielding power or those of interest to Daryl Gates. Incredibly, the spying targets included a Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, a Secretary of Defense, a current Governor and the President of the United States. It all happened in Los Angeles.

Detective Rothmiller is the modern-day Frank Serpico; he exposed the tentacles of corruption which reached to the highest levels within the LAPD and Washington D.C. It wasn’t long after that an assassin attempted to take his life. It was apparent to many that powerful forces wanted him silenced. Incredibly, in this book Detective Rothmiller names names! See why this book changed the LAPD and is required reading at many universities. As former Assistant United States Attorney Marvin Rudnick said, “Rothmiller was in a position to know. He did very sensitive work.”

Awesome find, to me at least. To get it free is even better! Thanks! We've got some great ebook-deal finders in this forum.

Two positives that I want to mention: the artwork; it's good. The size of the book; it's huge.

Two negatives: the book just covers fortifications and building technology in Europe, and that just from about the Middle Ages. Secondly, there is no table of contents, or index that I could find. And, in the Kindle Cloud Reader, at least, the "book is not yet enabled for searching." Neither of these mitigate what I said in the first sentence of this post!
