This is a mystery short story, originally published in 10-Story Detective, in 1945.

Here's the blurb from the story:

"Alvin Hinkey, the understudy flatfoot, would rather do his research in a beer-parlor than a book-hall. But when Hinkey borrowed a crook-book from the library, he seemed slated to drink in its sinister wisdom only out of a Roscoe's muzzle."

It looks like a pleasant little read, especially since it deals with timeless ingredients: beer, books, crooks, and flatfeet.

Like all the books I assemble on MobileRead, this too was assembled to reflect human intervention and artistic judgment.

I hope you enjoy it.
