One of Amazon's Kindle Countdown Deals, in the Mystery, Thriller & Suspense category is a "box set" of five legal thrillers. These appear to be "first in series", except in one case where it's a stand-alone. So these are presumably promotional, and meant to hook you, but I'm okay with that. The set is $0.99 for four more days, before going up to $2.99. (Today is Friday, June 13...hmmmm....)

Here's the blurb:

Spoiler:
Quote:
For the first time, the bestselling talents of Rebecca Forster, Paul Levine, Scott Pratt, Sheldon Siegel and Pamela Samuels Young are combined into a blockbuster box set deal! The set includes five first-in-series novels, including Forster's "Hostile Witness," Levine's "To Speak for the Dead," Pratt's "An Innocent Client," Siegel's "Special Circumstances" and Young's "Buying Time." Combined, the novels have been reviewed over 4,500 times, with more than 2,300 of those being FIVE-STAR! Sit back, relax and prepare to enjoy dozens of hours of bestselling thriller entertainment!

HOSTILE WITNESS (Rebecca Forster):

When sixteen-year-old Hannah Sheraton is arrested for the murder of her step-grandfather, the chief justice of the California Supreme court, her distraught mother turns to her old college roommate, Josie Baylor-Bates, for help. Josie, once a hot-shot criminal defense attorney, left the fast track behind for a small practice in Hermosa Beach, California. But Hannah Sheraton intrigues her and, when the girl is charged as an adult, Josie cannot turn her back. But the deeper she digs the more Josie realizes that politics, the law and family relationship

TO SPEAK FOR THE DEAD (Paul Levine):

A doctor in love with his patient's wife...
A fatal mistake during surgery...
Accident? Malpractice? Or murder?

Defending a surgeon in a malpractice case, linebacker-turned-lawyer Jake Lassiter begins to suspect that his client is innocent of negligence...but guilty of murder. Add a sexy widow, a deadly drug, and a grave robbery to the stew, and you have the recipe for Miami's trial of the century.

AN INNOCENT CLIENT (Scott Pratt):

A preacher is found brutally murdered in a Tennessee motel room.

A beautiful, mysterious young girl is accused.

In this bestselling debut, criminal defense lawyer Joe Dillard has become jaded over the years as he's tried to balance his career against his conscience. Savvy but cynical, Dillard wants to quit doing criminal defense, but he can't resist the chance to represent someone who might actually be innocent. His drug-addicted sister has just been released from prison and his mother is succumbing to Alzheimer's, but Dillard's commitment to the case never wavers despite the personal troubles and professional demands that threaten to destroy him.

SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES (Sheldon Siegel):

Meet Mike Daley. Ex-priest. Ex-public defender. And as of yesterday, ex-partner in one of San Francisco's most prominent law firms. Today he's out on his own, setting up practice on the wrong side of town. Then his best friend and former colleague is charged with a brutal double murder, and Daley is instantly catapulted into a high-profile investigation involving the prestigious law firm that just booted him.

As he prepares his case, Daley uncovers the firm's dirtiest secrets. It doesn't take long for him to discover that in this trial, ambition, friendship, greed, and long-standing grudges will play just as important a role as truth and justice...

BUYING TIME (Pamela Samuels Young):

Waverly Sloan is a down-on-his-luck lawyer. But just when he's about to hit rock bottom, he stumbles upon a business with the potential to solve all of his problems.

In Waverly's new line of work, he comes to the aid of people in desperate need of cash. But there's a catch. His clients must be terminally ill and willing to sign over rights to their life insurance policies before they can collect a dime. Waverly then finds investors eager to advance them thousands of dollars--including a hefty broker's fee for himself--in exchange for a significant return on their investment once the clients take their last breath.

When Waverly's clients start dying sooner than they should, Waverly is unwittingly drawn into a perilous web of greed, blackmail and murder.

The two freebies are (I believe) pertty much permanently free. They are also available at Smashwords for free without DRM, for those of you who care about that sort of stuff.

Well that's... surprising. I thought Amazon always put the "this title sold without DRM at the request of the publisher" whenever they skipped it. Learn something new every day.

Both "this title sold without DRM at the request of the publisher" and Simultaneous Device Usage: Unlimited may be found and sometimes both.

Hurrah for Tor, Baen, Pinbeam and all the Indie authors like Christopher Nuttall !

Sounds about right. And I did read that one (oh, and another that is somewhat similar, but the Alaska book is several into the series and it's a bit less "cozy" and more "urban").

Here's a repeat freebie at Amazon: The Quiet Assassin by Thomas Kirkwood. First published by Signet in 1985, this Cold War thriller was a Book-of-the-Month Club selection. Here's the Kirkus Review from May 8, 1985: https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-r...uiet-assassin/

Free today: Dead Angler (A Loon Lake Mystery #1) by Victoria Houston, first published as a mass market paperback by Berkley in April 2000.

Quote:
Retired dentist Paul Osborne hasn’t fly fished since his wife died. He hasn’t had a woman tell him what to do since then either. But in the company of Lewellyn Ferris, he’s relearning both. And when he and his lady instructor find a well-dressed body floating in the moonlight, Paul adds deputy to his list of experiences...

Whether the death is accidental -- or accidentally on purpose -- Lewellyn is determined to reel in the truth. She enlists Pail and his walleye-expert buddy, Ray, to help her get to the bottom of the murky mystery. Whoever thought small-town retirement could be this dangerous?

Today's KDD looks intriguing: The Coroner's Lunch (Dr. Siri Paiboun #1) by Colin Cotterill, on sale today at $1.99.

Quote:
Laos, 1975. The Communist Pathet Lao has taken over this former French colony. Dr. Siri Paiboun, a 72-year-old Paris-trained doctor, is appointed national coroner. Although he has no training for the job, there is no one else; the rest of the educated class has fled.

He is expected to come up with the answers the party wants. But crafty and charming Dr.Siri is immune to bureaucratic pressure. At his age, he reasons, what can they do to him? And he knows he cannot fail the dead who come into his care without risk of incurring their boundless displeasure. Eternity could be a long time to have the spirits mad at you.
