New Nook Owner Here

Hello everyone I'm Lianne. I finally decided to get an eReader due to being tired of moving my library every time we move (military) and spending money on books when I don't really need to, since I go through a lot of books and my interests fall in the public domain anyway. Last week I decided on the Nook and it arrived 3 days ago. I have downloaded just over 650 EPUB books from sites like Feedbooks, manybooks and adelaide.edu.au; I am also already using Calibre to manage them. I've read two short books already on my Nook and I really love it. This device was so easy to get started on!

I've been reading a lot of the conversations here and on the B&N Book Club site in regards to the whole DRM issue, ebook pricing and the like. So far I have yet to download a single free book from the B&N site and do not plan on purchasing ebooks but rarely. We will see.

Welcome to MR, Lianne, and congratulations on your new Nook!

It looks like you have discovered some great places to get books. Have you checked our Wiki? There is a page devoted to free book sites. Plus, just in case you haven't found them: smashwords.com and baen.com which has a great free library.

Then, of course, the MR Library with thousands of book beautifully formatted by some very dedicated MR members. ePub format

Have fun continuing to explore MR and just ask if you have any questions.

Good to have your company, Lianne. You probably know of the free, huge and admirable ProjectGutenberg library. The only slight hitch there is that some books' formatting leaves something to be desired. As Dreams says above, though, the MobileRead work is always beautifully prepared and will present well on your Nook. Most here would also recommend that you download the excellent and free Calibre library software developed by MR member Kovid Goyal. Best wishes. Neil

Thanks to everyone who has welcomed me. I checked out the ebook section on the forum yesterday. Yes I have been on wikibooks, smashwords, Baen, Gutenberg (and Gutenberg Australia), Internet Archive, Kobo, Open Library, and Fictionwise. I've been on a lot of these sites way before deciding to get an eReader. I do not care much for Google Books however.

Yes I am already using Calibre (and have updated to the new version) and love it, thank you. I got the how to log a Series figured out last night and things seem to be going ok so far. I love how quick and fool proof this whole switch to an eReader is and loading with Calibre simplifies it even more. I really like how you can see your library in one view and what's actually on the device in another. I was so hesitant when I looked into making the switch about 2 years ago but am glad I finally have.
