miBook E-Reader/Cooking/Photo Frame/Multimedia PDA
It is priced at around $130, has no built-in memory, comes with a 7-inch LCD color screen (with LED backlight), and is currently marketed as a cooking aid device. I find Photoco's miBook difficult to describe; yet, according to Crunchgear's John Biggs, it could be a real contender in the e-book market.

Of course, no information on what file formats it supports, how much it weighs, battery life.
The website says "Spring 2008", er, didn't Summer just start? BOb |

Drat. I read Gizmodo everyday. How did I miss this one.
I've been looking through the first few pages of a Google search, and I am surprised at some of the titles. I've found a tour guide for Walt Disney World, a book on lawn care, several different cookbooks, and a book on parenting. |

The Kindle and this thing are not even in the same market, I don't understand how Crunchgear could consider them in competition.

Wow, are those typical Gizmodo posters? Pass on that website, for sure.
The market for DIY (TV "how to," cooking, decorating shows, Home Depot, etc etc) is huge, so I'm not too surprised to see a device like this. I suspect content will be by subscription or membership. |

I think this is interesting:

I also note that this is really a media player, and they're playing up audio and video features. I suppose it could read books, but without a better defined way of getting them into the player, why bother? For books based on text, the Kindle ease of use has them beat. But they could possibly go after the magazine market, if they can sort out the ease of use issues. |

Um, but isn't the fact that e-readers don't have any backlights (and so, no strain on the eyes from hours reading books) what makes them so good for... book reading?

Umm...Doesn't seem to have e-book reader software, i.e. .TXT, HTML, ect. Still, the how-to market could use the video software. Diagrams only do so much.
Don't know about build quality. Will it break in 5 minutes? So much for the negatives. It claims to play back videos, music, how-to guides, and photos. If it's sturdy, it's a great convergence device. Add and e-book reader and you're wired. If they meet the price, with the specs given, and it's sturdy/durable, watch out Apple/Creative/Archos/ect. |

One big, fat, juicy word: Color.
Second big, fat, juicy word: Cheap! That could make this a workable viewer for color magazines, providing the appropriate viewing SW (PDF, Flash, whatever) is added. And I've said before, if a color magazine reader achieves popularity, textbooks, then novels, optimized for the device/format shouldn't be far behind. And the price is right! |

http://www.aoa.org/x5253.xml It looks like the real problem may be habits of the user and vanity in not wearing glasses is a contributer (reading between the lines). Neither backlight or refresh seem to be a factor except when refresh and florescent lights clash. Dale |

I found some more detailed specs (including photos and a video of it in action) in a very unusual place:
QVC (home shopping channel) at a introductory price of $112.80! Talk about niche marketing!
