Quotes About Books and Reading

Since I first stumbled onto a Bartlett's book of quotations at my local library as a kid, I've collected quotes. My calendars and book journals are usually engraved with quotes to further the hobby. As I was looking around for next year's calendar and book journals, I thought I'd toss it out to the community.

So, what quotes about reading or books do you love? Where did you come by the quote? I'll start with one of my own and await the responses.

Quote:
One must be an inventor to read well. There is then creative reading as well as creative writing.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

I've not scene any of those around here... well ok, maybe a couple....

My problem with quotes is that I can never remember them. I'll hear a good line in a movie or read one in a book and tell myself to remember it but I never do

Well, since the thread in Reading Recs is for quotes in general, and this thread is for quotes about books and reading I don't see any problem in leaving it here.

The first quote that popped into my head has nothing to do with reading, and yet reading is what I always think of when I recall it. Here, I'm sure, at last some people will understand...

"A sure cure for seasickness is to sit under a tree." (Spike Milligan)

Cheers,

Me too!

I read one a while ago that said "A book is a place to go to when you have no other place to go to." which I thought was fairly clever.
