HELP - When I use Calibre my entire library reverts to "not yet indexed"
I am new to this forum and didn't see a thread that directly addresses this issue. If I missed it, my apologies. I just discovered Calibre and I love it, but every time I transfer anything to my Kindle Touch with it, the entire library on the touch reverts to "not yet indexed." This is wreaking havoc with my battery life, slowing down the machine and making it very difficult to search for anything. When I leave it plugged in overnight, all 352 books are neatly indexed the next morning until the next time I plug into Calibre.
Am I doing something wrong? Is this a bug in Calibre? Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Once again, if my posting is out of line, please accept my apologies. I'm just excited to think that someone might be able to explain to me! Jo |

Just the Kindle way - indexing
Quote:
I only have the old K3 (KK) but I suspect the Touch works the same way. If so - NO ! It's NOT a calibre issue - it's a Kindle Issue. When ever you add new books to a Kindle, the new books will have to be indexed to help you search, use dictionaries etc. However, I'm not quite sure what your problem is. Did you transfer 352 books to the Touch ? If so, they'll have to be indexed. If you only transfer 2 books to the Touch only 2 books would have to be indexed. UNLESS your indexes are inconsistent. Anyways: This should be moved to the Kindle Forum, and I suggest you give us a more detailed description of what you're doing. Oh - before transferring new books to Touch, please check Indexing status on Touch first. If all books are indexed before transfer, only new books should be indexed. But then again - I just remembered : Does your Touch have the correct date/time ? Hopefully fellow "Touch'ers" will join thread to help you out Cheers, Per |

Thanks... now to figure out how to move the thread, LOL
Let me clarify. I will plug the kindle in, use Calibre to move one book onto the Kindle, and then every single book on my entire Kindle reverts to not indexed. Thus to even move one book, I have 352 total books (as of yesterday) that have to go through the full indexing process. This slows down the kindle and makes it impossible to even find the new book for a while.
All 352 Kindle books are indexed prior to plugging in to Calibre. It's like it's a giant reset switch for every single book... So, I will do my best to move this thread and hope a kindle touch user can help me. Thanks for getting the ball rolling on troubleshooting |

Also - did you already move it to the Kindle forum? I think so, but not 100% sure. Yes, clearly I am not experienced with forums, LOL. Thanks again!

This has to be something to do with file creation dates. The clock on either your Touch or your computer has the wrong date. Your Touch should automatically get the right date via WiFi (or 3G if you have it), so I think it is likely your PC at fault but it could be the Touch. It does not really matter that they are wrong, what matters is that they are different.
What I think is happening is that all your side-loaded ebooks have a date stamp created by your PC and these are in the future (with respect to the clock on your Touch) - so every time a new file is created the re-indexing kicks in and the index program thinks all your files are new (created after the index). If you connect your Kindle to a PC, the "data modified" for each file should be displayed if you are in the "details" view. Compare them to the actual date and time and also look for files created by the Kindle, e.g. .mbp files and see if they show much different dates. |

I've had this happen on my K3 last year and that was when I had over 300 books on it. After that I only keep about 50 on my Kindle and I don't use Calibre to send books anymore. I upload my books directly to Amazon by using the Send To Kindle program.

So, I've discovered that it does it even if Calibre is completely turned off, and every time I plug into my computer. I have checked the date and time on my computer and that is accurate. The time on my Kindle is also accurate, but I have no idea how to check the date specifically. I really don't want to clear all those books off my kindle, I actually refer to quite a few of them a lot.
Any suggestions, folks? I really appreciate the help you're offering!!! |

I'd try a factory reset and see if that fixes. If not your Kindle may be defective. Do you have another PC you can test it on? The only thing I can think of is try a different USB port, different cable or both. |

I'm not sure if this is different from restarting, but the next thing to try is a hard reset of your Kindle Touch by pressing and holding the power button for 20 seconds. Release the power button. The reboot screen will appear. If that does not work, then I suggest calling Amazon. |
