for me it's not publishers so much as the professional editing services that are offered by big houses (well, most of the time anyway).

I can understand that for news, but not for books. For fiction, I read a lot of what other people recommend me, but I also look for interesting reads that are innovative than banal. For non-fiction, I read authoritative books on the topic, regardless of whether I agree with the viewpoints or not.
