E.T.A Hoffmann (1776-1822) was a Prussian artist, author, caricaturist, composer, lawyer, musical director, and musician. He wrote very many short stories and novellas, though not many of them have been translated into English.

The translator for Weird Tales was J.T. Bealby (1858-1944). He provided a 'Biographical Notice' about Hoffmann in the book, and stated that 'the common characteristic running through the stories [is] that he puts them before us more as individual pictures than as developments of character ... after the manner of a painter'

As well as the Biographical Notice Weird Tales contains eleven short stories or novellas: The Cremona Violin, The Fermata, Signor Formica, The Sandman, The Entail, Arthur's Hall, The Doge and Dogess, Master Martin the Cooper, Mademoiselle de Scudéri, Gambler's Luck, and Master Johannes Wacht.
