A stupid question probably!
My new Kindle just arrived. The instructions tell me how to power on, wake, and sleep. Nowhere does it say how to power off. Am I to assume that when not using it, the Kindle is just asleep and not swtiched off?
I have never had a device that you couldn't actually switch OFF. Any answers gratefully received! Thank you! |

You don't power it off; in sleep mode it's using a neglible amount of power. I've left mine asleep for weeks at a time and it's made no appreciable difference to the battery level when I turn it on again.

I think it is possible to switch it fully off, by holding the power button for several seconds. Normally, though, it isn't switched fully off. When in sleep mode, it will consume very little power (since the screen only takes power when it changes - displaying a static picture doesn't take power)

There's really no reason to want to turn it off, though, unless you plan to leave it unused for months.

Holding the power switch for several seconds will definitely turn the screen off, but the Kindle is never "off." Sleep and deep sleep.

Holding the slide key for seven seconds is dicey because if the finger slips, screen saver is displayed. And seven seconds is really a long time! |

It is not possible for a eInk screen to "burn". It's all about plastic balls being present or not (very simply told). Although I guess that a "pixel" can "stick" if the electric circuit to that particular "pixel" stop working for any or no reason. |

Turning it off is not exactly a hidden feature. The instructions are in the user manual.

Really? The Kindle doesn't completely turn off? Not that I'm trying to counter everyone's comments, but I'm confused as the Kindle User's Guide, 3rd Ed. says you can "turn off" (and "turn on") the Kindle versus "sleep."
Just hold ALT + G to refresh the screen if you experience any "ghosting." |
