I didn't like Pompeii but I loved his Imperium, which is the first part of his Cicero trilogy. The second book is called Lustrum (in Britain) or Conspirata (in the US).

Not-fun fact about Vestal Virgins: if it was found that they had sexual relations, they would be buried alive. (They had to be killed without bloodshed)

Do you have more "fun-er" facts? That one seems a little on the short side of "fun".

I've changed the "fun" description. Here is a real "fun" fact: if you were a criminal condemned to death and you happened to run into a Vestal Virgin on your way to your execution, you would be pardoned for your crime. Also, Vestal Virgins could, in fact, marry if they chose to after completing their 30 years of service. And they could inherit.

That sounds better.
I just ran into this - Roman Chariot Racer Highest Paid Athlete Ever: Big Pic " an illiterate charioteer named Gaius Appuleius Diocles who earned 35,863,120 sesterces in prize money." Click the link above to find out what 35,863,120 sesterces would be in today’s dollars. |
