Alexander Vindex Vennard (1884-1947) was a freelance journalist who was prolific in the 1920s and 30s. He wrote many short stories, non-fiction historical articles, children's serials, and edited and produced a weekly children's page for a Queensland newspaper. Most of his fiction was published under the name "Frank Reid", but he was better known as "Bill Bowyang" of the children's pages. So well known that he was called 'Bowie" by his friends.

The unique middle name "Vindex" comes from the Vindex range near Winton in Queensland, as he was born on a cattle station nearby named after the range. Today the range (actually a mesa) is the site of the internationally known Australian dinosaur discoveries.
