Note that the heuristic algorithm is pretty good, but not 100% perfect.
If you don't want to use Calibre you can also test the "Smarten Punctuation" feature with DiapDealer's SmartyPants Python wrapper. (Both use the same python script.)

I would probably defer to the Modify Epub plugin if at all possible. Simply because it (and the underlying calibre routine) takes a few extra precautions to prevent the destruction of things like html comments (SmartyPants on its own will convert any occurrence of -- to an emdash by default. "<!-- Hello -->"... you get the idea). I also believe the SmartyPants script that ships with calibre has some modifications that are not included with the last official version of SmartyPants. I posted my wrapper script before I knew the Modify Epub plugin was an option. But have at it if you're adventurous.

Epub causes crash

Attached epub causes the beta to crash on Windows Vista 64 bit.

It does open in calibre and in epubreader. Even if it is malformed, which I will investigate, it needs to fail more gracefully.

It does not crash in .5.3.
Attached Files
File Type: epub Prince_Bismarck_From_Waterloo_to_Versail.epub (1.25 MB, 104 views)

It doesn't crash on Linux (0.5.902) either.

Re: Epub causes crash: It does crash on my compiled version of 0.5.902 under Ubuntu 12.04. Any fix may not be able to do more than display an error before crashing, if that, depending on what it is.

It opens for me in the beta on W7-64.

Validates with errors:

OEBPS/Text/_page_map_.xml This resource is present in the OPF <manifest>, but it's not reachable (it's unused).

OEBPS/content.opf line 55 The <item> element's "media-type" attribute has value "application/oebps-page-map+xml", but the file's media type is "application/xhtml+xml".

OEBPS/content.opf line 57 The "page-map" attribute is not an allowed attribute of the <spine> element.

The proprietary Adobe page map file and media-type will always show up as an error/warning in the various ePub validators... it's not spec, after all. But it shouldn't cause any crashes (NOTE: I'm not saying that IS what's causing the crashing).

Epub causes crash

This file does not have content.opf, but volume.opf which contains what I believe would be in content.opf. It seems to be allowable, but it does not seem to be common.

That should be OK, I think, as long as "volume.opf" is correctly identified in the META-INF/container.xml file as the rootfile.

ETA: but Sigil will "normalize" it upon first loading, though.

There is another book with identical issue.

Load into .5.3 and save doing nothing. Then loads ok in the beta.

Looks like isn't looking for volume in the beta maybe?

So, looks like the beta chokes on reading in certain "non standard" epub layouts.
