18,000 Nook Colors made per day

B&N's chairman, Len Riggio, is Publishing Weekly's Person of the Year. From the PW article:
Quote:
B&N is manufacturing Nookcolors at a rate of 18,000 per day and is loading up a 747 every four to five days to bring devices to the U.S. from China, Riggio says.
That is a lot of Nook Colors, 500,000 or so for the holidays. Also:
Quote:
"We intend to have a lot to say about the future of bookstores," Riggio promises. "We're in it to stay."
Not really surprising, since this is their only potential advantage over Amazon. The question is whether anyone can make mainstream chain bookselling work in the US.

what are they going to sell them for twenty-five-bucks? 18k/day for the US only? Or are they simply running the production line for a day and a half? I call BS on that.

it's not so much can they make it work as so much as can they make it work again. The physical stores are going to have to reinvent themselves I'm afraid

their digital nook programs and devices is going to have to be it's centerpiece.

An advantage of high production per day, and 747 shipping, is that they can probably ramp down production fairly fast. If they don't sell them all for the holidays, they can sell easily them next year. However, I think they probably will sell most (and perhaps all) of them.

This is the first year that the US ebook reading device market is in full flow at Christmas, and it did ok in other years despite shortages. Half a million high-end reading devices in the Christmas season isn't a stretch at all. There are many lower price alternatives, but the price isn't that high and it does deliver color. Color might not be a big deal for most reading, but it is certainly a great point of sale feature.

One more point: The Nook Color appears to be one of the hottest topics of discussion at many of the Android tablet forums. It seems like a lot of folks are buying the thing just to root it.

Been done, Kindle app runs on the rooted nookcolor without any problem. But not that many people appear to that keen on installing it.

If not, then Kindle is only going to thrive when people who read books compare eInk to LCD. When they compare battery life of Kindle (30 days!!!) vs. what? 12 hours of LCD?

I'm sure, but that doesn't guarantee they will sell a lot.

The more direct competition is the Galaxy Tab, which apparently sold 1 million units in the US in the last 2 months.

Also, due to major screwing the pooch with Nook availability last year -- and the need to have multiple units sitting in thousands of stores, rather than sitting in warehouses -- B&N needs to far outpace the expected demand. This is Riggio trying to assure people there won't be shortages this year.

As such, if you're going to measure its success, you have to wait and see how many actually sell as opposed to how many B&N ordered.

actually it's supposed to be more like 7-8 hours... so you're going to charge it overnight on a daily basis... and you must be prepared that the battery life will decrease in time...

why? You have to figure there are many layers involved, for one you have to make enough for the current demand, you also what to make sure you have a fully stocked inventory. the last thing you want to have underneath your product is "Out of Stock" which means to the consumer "Well looks like I'm buying xyz brand instead.

and on top of that you have to stock up and meet the current demands of multiple avenues you are sellilng your product. It's no longer just have BN online and BN stores, you now have Best Buy and Walmart stores to supply now as well.

Heck just all the Walmart's alone you will need close 18,000 a day.

This product seems to have a very high demand this Holiday Season.

I was reading a PC World article that was basically saying the buying potential of the Android hackers could be huge.
