As others before me have done, welcome to MobileRead.

The Cybook Gen3 directly supports mobi format. As others have mentioned format conversion is an option for all readers.

Since the screens are the same for the "big 3" in the US and the price difference is so small as to be meaningless, it comes down to which one feels better in your hands. Which one has the controls where they are easy for you to operate. I have the older Sony and kept it because I find it easier to operate than the new 505. While the 505's screen is better, I did not find it so much better that I had to upgrade. For me the Kindle is not an option as the control buttons are not where I can use them easily without excessive page turns. If I was in the market for an e-ink reader in the US today I would pick the Gen3. (With the Sony 505 as a close second.)

Fictionwise is also a great place for getting books in many formats including Sony's LRF and mobi.

Good luck on your quest. Keep us informed about your decision.

Welcome to MobileRead.

I'm the proud owner of both a Kindle and a Sony 505. I prefer the Kindle since I find the controls on the Sony hard to press. But, my hubby bought me the Sony cover with the lightwedge. That makes it convenient to use when reading in bed or in the car at night. Since I buy SF from Baen/Webscriptions, I can put the same books on the Kindle and the Sony and move from one to the other while reading the same book. I sure wish I could get an equivalent cover for the Kindle!

The previous posters have given you pretty good information. Regarding putting other content onto the Kindle: The Kindle will handle plain text files just fine. PDF files need to be converted; you can try it yourself or you can send to Amazon. I ran an experiment and found that the one I converted looked better than the one that Amazon converted. (Note that they do *not* scan the PDF files; they simply put them through a software conversion tool.)

Regardless of which reader you get, you're in for a treat. An electronic reader is a wonderful device for all of us book lovers.

Well, right now I'm thinking Cybook or Kindle. It seems that both are currently 'sold out' for a while. Kindle probably makes the most sense for me but I'm not inclined to pay now for delivery later, especially if a new version may be coming soon...so, for now I may just keep reading on my laptop....

That being said, there are Sony's in stock at the local Target so who knows what tomorrow will bring! I tend to get overcome with enthusiasm so you may see a post tomorrow, or the next day announcing my new reader!

Thanks everyone for your help and encouragement! You are the best!

Update!! I managed my urge to go out and get a Sony (which was the only one I could find easily) and today was able to snag a refurbished Kindle on Amazon!! It should arrive tomorrow!

Thank you everyone for your comments. I really got me to think about what I really wanted/needed in a reader. Ultimately, I realized I wanted access to Amazon's stock.
