That is the answer to your question about what did I see special about the PtP IP addresses. If you really want help in diagnosing this problem, then you should double check your posts against the 12 commandments here: http://www.netfunny.com/rhf/jokes/88q1/13785.8.html The fewer hits you make on that list, the more people will want to help you. |

ok .. serious stuff.
i managed to get a 3g image clone outside a shop in exchange for teaching the guy how to jailbreak and setup the usbnet for the device. and i manage to get my 3g back! yeah! i don't know what's the difference between the internet and the 3g image i got. if the internet image will work on all kindle touch including 3g as claimed, then there must be some configuration in the internet image that is not right for the 3g device. Make a mount point on your (Linux, Mac) system for each of the images ; Mount them ; Do a "diff" command on the two trees to list (at first) only the files that differ by name. Then investigate each of the files named for things 3G specific. One of the things to look for is a different 3G card system image. The Kindle system has the ability to download into the 3G card the 3G card's system image. This may have country specific information (not all Kindles are served in all countries by AT&T). OR - - Just post both images somewhere people can get at them to do the above investigation. |

is this correct? i have created the directory image1 in /private/tmp
[root] mount -t ext3 kt_5.1.2-mmcblk0p1-3g.img image1 mount: exec /System/Library/Filesystems/ext3.fs/Contents/Resources/mount_ext3 for /private/tmp/image1: No such file or directory Last edited by dicalp; 08-25-2012 at 11:50 AM. |

If we can find out what is different, perhaps the current image could be modified and reuploaded, so that it is no longer "wifi-only". It would also be useful to know WHAT those differences are, just to increase our knowledge base for future debricking.

Depending on your distribution, its version and its age . . . It may be as simple as: My mount point here: /mnt/k321 The image in the current directory: k321.sfs Code:
sudo mount k321.sfs /mnt/k321 "mount" **should** auto-detect that it is a file and force the '-o loop' option. "mount" **should** auto-detect the file type, you shouldn't need the '-t ext3' . BUT that may well vary with the degree of automation in your distribution. so (as root in above) mount -o loop kt_5.1.2-mmcblk0p1-3g.img /private/tmp/image1 Should do the job on any distribution. |

ok .. was using mac and mac does not support ext3!
setup a vm and here's what i got. doesn't seem to reveal much ... i thought it was the /etc/guid but even replacing it does not help enabling the 3g in the internet image. image1 is 3g image2 is from Just a note: before making the diff, you want to make sure that both images are from the exact same Firmware version.
And maybe you want to use something like "diff -burN /path/to/img1 /path/to/img 2>/dev/null". That will make the output more readable. Oh, and please enclose the output in a CODE box. |

Not even when asked directly if the kernel and system image was flashed in matched pairs. Hmm... The root password is based on the device serial number in the original Amazon images. I see that the root password was not "corrected" to that of the forensic images. Must still be "buddy's password", based on the serial number of the "buddy's" Kindle. Well, on the good side, the root password is not that hard to crack. Last edited by knc1; 08-26-2012 at 04:26 AM. |

This is quite interesting since I was assuming my demo Kindle Touch didn't have 3g while it could just be that the image doesn't support it.
Please keep reporting about those differences! |

I'm still not convinced.
In other words: I still believe that the firmware is the same for 3G and non-3G models. Anything else just doesn't make sense. However, I'm absolutely willing to revise my opinion if there is any evidence which proves me wrong. |

I am still voting for "user error" but am willing to read the diff files if the O.P. will post them. |

I can confirm this, when I flashed the 5.0.0 images on ixtab's website 3G started working!
