ISBNs for mobi files to be uploaded to Amazon

I understand you need separate ISBNs for a printed book, for epub and a third for mobi. I have been told that if you include your own ISBN within an ebook uploaded to the Amazon store, that Amazon always uses their own ISBN. So there is no point in trying to use your own ISBN with a kindle ebook for the Amazon store. I would like ask if this is peoples' experience?

Amazon don't have "their own ISBN". Amazon have something called an ASIN, which, for printed books, happens to be the same as the ISBN. But that doesn't apply to digital books.

As far as I know, Amazon assigns the ASIN when they put the product on sale. The vendor has no control over it. If they are selling books (or any other content) in different formats, they would presumably have different ASINs (just like when they sell clothes in different sizes).
