The expanded edition of Growing a better future: Food Justice in a resource-constrained world, by Robert Bailey, Duncan Green, Naomi Hossain, Kate Kilpatrick, et al, is free in the Kindle store.

Book Description
The global food system works only for the few – for most of us it is broken. It leaves the billions who consume food lacking sufficient power and knowledge about what they buy and eat, and the majority of small food producers dis-empowered and unable to fulfil their productive potential. The failure of the system flows from failures of government – failures to regulate, to correct, to protect, to resist, to invest – which mean that companies, interest groups, and elites are able to plunder resources and to redirect flows of finance, knowledge, and food.
Growing a Better Future describes a new age of growing crisis: food price spikes and oil price hikes, devastating weather events, financial meltdowns, and global contagion. It shows how the food system is at once a driver of this fragility and highly vulnerable to it, and why in the twenty-first century it leaves 925 million people hungry.
Growing a Better Future supports a new campaign with a simple message: another future is possible and we can build it together. Over the coming years, decisive action around the world could enable hundreds of millions more people to feed their families and prevent catastrophic climate change from destroying their (and our) futures.
In this new enhanced edition, Oxfam adds papers and research which develop and update the main themes of the report: land, and the growing scandal surrounding the new wave of investments (‘land grabs’); how climate change is related to food security and the East African food crisis; and how people living in poverty around the world have coped with food price crises. There are also extended case studies from Bolivia, Brazil, Guatemala, India, Malawi, and Nepal, and an extended and updated bibliography and resources list.

Much more information is available at www.oxfam.org/grow – the website for Oxfam’s GROW campaign. For access to over 3,000 advocacy, research, and programme learning publications across all Oxfam’s areas of work visit www.oxfam.org.uk/policyandpractice.

These are all repeats of previous free books, now free again in the Kindle store (I don't track how long they have been full price, but it seems to vary from a few days to several months):

From publisher O'Reilly, there are a number of free titles, with three general themes: computer science topics, new computer languages and computer book bibliographies. Don't dismiss this latter as just catalogs of their books - putting together such lists is something many serious scholars do, before getting to writing their own titles and with so many books out in some areas, having a bibliography can help new students when studying a new language. Some of these are new to the blog, as I've been letting them accumulate for a post; others are repeats, which I'm including for completeness. Also, if you prefer EPUB format, you should be able to find all of them free on O'Reilly's website.

Blood Ties, the first title in the PI Julie Collins series by Lori G. Armstrong, is free on Kindle and from Barnes & Noble (where it is featured as the Free Friday book). Grab this one (think of it as a full-book sample), but be sure to also check out The Julie Collins Series, which gets you all four books in the series; currently it's on sale at Amazon for $9.99 (list price is $20). I don't see it at all, over at B&N.

Book Description
Julie Collins is stuck in a dead-end secretarial job with the Bear Butte County Sheriff’s office, and still grieving over the unsolved murder of her Lakota half-brother. Lack of public interest in finding his murderer, or the killer of several other transient Native American men, has left Julie with a bone-deep cynicism she counters with tequila, cigarettes, and dangerous men. The one bright spot in her mundane life is the time she spends working part-time as a PI with her childhood friend, Kevin Wells. When the body of a sixteen-year old white girl is discovered in nearby Rapid Creek, Julie believes this victim will receive the attention others were denied. Then she learns Kevin has been hired, mysteriously, to find out where the murdered girl spent her last few days. Julie finds herself drawn into the case against her better judgment, and discovers not only the ugly reality of the young girl’s tragic life and brutal death, but ties to her and Kevin’s past that she is increasingly reluctant to revisit. On the surface the situation is eerily familiar. But the parallels end when Julie realizes some family secrets are best kept buried deep. Especially those serious enough to kill for.

A History of the World in 6 Glasses ($1.99 Kindle; $2.99 B&N), by Tom Standage, is today's Kindle Deal of the Day. This book was the Nook Daily Find less than a week ago (and Amazon matched the price of $3.19), so if you resisted then, you should consider getting it now (alas, I got hooked reading about barley in the Middle East and bought it last week).

Book Description
From beer to Coca-Cola, the six drinks that have helped shape human history.
Throughout human history. certain drinks have done much more than just quench thirst. As Tom Standage relates with authority and charm, six of them have had a surprisingly pervasive influence on the course of history, becoming the defining drink during a pivotal historical period.

A History of the World in 6 Glasses tells the story of humanity from the Stone Age to the 21st century through the lens of beer, wine, spirits, coffee, tea, and cola. Beer was first made in the Fertile Crescent and by 3000 B.C.E. was so important to Mesopotamia and Egypt that it was used to pay wages. In ancient Greece wine became the main export of her vast seaborne trade, helping spread Greek culture abroad. Spirits such as brandy and rum fueled the Age of Exploration, fortifying seamen on long voyages and oiling the pernicious slave trade. Although coffee originated in the Arab world, it stoked revolutionary thought in Europe during the Age of Reason, when coffeehouses became centers of intellectual exchange. And hundreds of years after the Chinese began drinking tea, it became especially popular in Britain, with far-reaching effects on British foreign policy. Finally, though carbonated drinks were invented in 18th-century Europe they became a 20th-century phenomenon, and Coca-Cola in particular is the leading symbol of globalization.

For Tom Standage, each drink is a kind of technology, a catalyst for advancing culture by which he demonstrates the intricate interplay of different civilizations. You may never look at your favorite drink the same way again.

Autobiography of Mark Twain: The Complete and Authoritative Edition, Volume 1 ($6.99 Kindle, B&N), by Mark Twain, Harriet E. Smith, Benjamin Griffin and Victor Fischer, is the Nook Daily Find. If you've seen this one in the stores, you'll know why I bought the ebook edition instead (I would greatly want to avoid having to carry it anywhere, let alone have to try to hold it propped up and open to read). I grabbed this on last December, using a coupon at Kobo (for 14 cents under this sale price!), but their price is now back over $25. Be very careful if you are searching for this one from your device (especially the nook, that lumps them all together), as there are a number of other editions of his autobiography that have been released by other "publishers" (the actual text of the original is, probably, in the public domain at this point). The one on sale and that you see in stores is the one edited Harriet E. Smith. Some of the other editions may also be the edited (and greatly abbreviated) version released before the 100 year anniversary of his death.

Book Description
“I've struck it!” Mark Twain wrote in a 1904 letter to a friend. “And I will give it away--to you. You will never know how much enjoyment you have lost until you get to dictating your autobiography.” Thus, after dozens of false starts and hundreds of pages, Twain embarked on his “Final (and Right) Plan” for telling the story of his life. His innovative notion--to “talk only about the thing which interests you for the moment”—meant that his thoughts could range freely. The strict instruction that these texts remain unpublished for 100 years meant that when they came out, he would be “dead, and unaware, and indifferent,” and that he was therefore free to speak his “whole frank mind.” The year 2010 marks the 100th anniversary of Twain's death. In celebration of this important milestone and in honor of the cherished tradition of publishing Mark Twain's works, UC Press is proud to offer for the first time Mark Twain's uncensored autobiography in its entirety and exactly as he left it. This major literary event brings to readers, admirers, and scholars the first of three essential volumes and presents Mark Twain's authentic and unsuppressed voice, brimming with humor, ideas, and opinions, and speaking clearly from the grave as he intended

One Imperfect Christmas, by Myra Johnson, is free in the Kindle store for UK customers (UK link)

Book Description
Graphic designer Natalie Pearce faces the most difficult Christmas of her life. For almost a year, her mother has lain in a nursing home, the victim of a massive stroke, and Natalie blames herself for not being there when it happened. Worse, she’s allowed the monstrous load of guilt to drive a wedge between her and everyone she loves—most of all her husband Daniel. Her marriage is on the verge of dissolving, her prayer life is suffering, and she’s one Christmas away from hitting rock bottom.Junior-high basketball coach Daniel Pearce is at his wit’s end. Nothing he’s done has been able to break through the wall Natalie has erected between them. And their daughter Lissa’s adolescent rebellion isn’t helping matters. As Daniel’s hope reaches its lowest ebb, he wonders if this Christmas will spell the end of his marriage and the loss of everything he holds dear.

The Lord is My Shepherd (Psalm 23 Mysteries), by Debbie Viguie, is free in the Kindle store for UK customers (UK link)

Book Description
Cindy’s church is getting ready to celebrate Easter, and Jeremiah’s Temple is preparing for Passover when Cindy literally stumbles over the body of an unknown man lying dead in the sanctuary. The church was locked, and a bloody cross necklace on the floor seems to be the only clue. The killer is likely a member of the congregation, but there are hints that similar deaths have happened in the past. Are Cindy and Jeremiah dealing with a serial killer? They have to unravel the clues before Easter Sunday arrives and more people die.Cindy and Jeremiah come from two different worlds, even though they work right next door to each other. Cindy is a strong Christian who lives a normal but somewhat dull life, working as a church secretary. Jeremiah is a Reformed rabbi with a mysterious past full of danger and excitement. But one eventful Easter/Passover week, the two find themselves working together to solve a murder and stop a serial killer from striking again. Solving the mystery should put an end to their alliance, but the church secretary and the rabbi quickly find themselves enmeshed in another mystery. Soon the two form a friendly alliance and friendship, exploring personal history and faith and growing closer with each passing adventure. Despite their differences Cindy and Jeremiah find a lot of common ground.

How to Drive Your Competition Crazy: Creating Disruption for Fun and Profit ($9.99 Kindle), by Guy Kawasaki, is free in the Sony store. No idea if this one will show up in the Kindle store or is a mistake at Sony; also, at Amazon, there is an older edition from 1995, which has the reviews linked.

Book Description
If you were intrigued by the title of this book, you are probably the type of business book reader who's had enough of management self-help and touchy-feely tomes, enough of how-to guides that encourage you to take the kinder, gentler approach to competitors, customers, and employees. You are ready for the gloves to come off, and the one thing you'll want in your hands when they do is the first can-do, how-to, kick-butt gonzo guide to driving your competitors off the deep end.

In the time-honored tradition of the maxim "It's not how you play the game, but whether you win or lose," bestselling author of Selling the Dream and Forbes columnist Guy Kawasaki has written the definitive take-no-prisoners guide to help the Davids to beat the Goliaths. The product of Kawasaki's years of experience as an evangelist for the then-upstart Apple and as a computer guru and business strategist, How to Drive Your Competition Crazy as an invaluable source book of irreverent and sometimes extreme stratagems in sales, marketing, production, and human resources that will help your company or organization get and keep the upper hand.

Whether you are launching a new company or product, consolidating your strength in the marketplace, or trying to hold your own against a competitor with greater resources, How to Drive Your Competition Crazy offers a comprehensive blueprint for success. From the initial steps of learning as much about your own company as you do about your enemy to advanced techniques like playing with your opponents' minds, Guy Kawasaki explores every facet of the premise that the best defense is a good offense.

29 Free Books for Australians (Kindle)
Most of these are still the Twelve Days of Winter series pre-orders, that are still free for Australians (only) in the Kindle store, but there are a few new titles now free from Harper imprints, both currently available and as pre-orders. You can see the entire list from this search. Again, I doubt any of these will end up free in the US, but anything is possible.

These are the new additions to the list:
  1. Warriors: Omen of the Stars Collection with Bonus Material: Warriors: Omen of the Stars #1: The Fourth Apprentice; Warriors: Omen of the Stars #2: Fading ... Omen of the Stars #3: Night Whispers by Erin Hunter
  2. Reckless Night: A Dangerous Passion Novella by Lisa Marie Rice
  3. Any Given Christmas: A Sugar Shack Novel by Candis Terry
  4. The Christmas Cookie Chronicles: Carrie: A Twilight, Texas Story by Lori Wilde
  5. A Respectable Trade by Philippa Gregory
  6. Letter from Chicago by Cathy Kelly
  7. A Lion Among Men: Volume Three in The Wicked Years by Gregory Maguire

If you live in Australia, I'd at least snap up the first and last on the list, before someone at Harper figures out what they have done. If you are into romance, especially holiday romance, then grab the others, as well.

Two new offers for KSO owners (with a twist):

Buy one of 100 Horror titles for $1
Save 50% on Kindle Covers / Kindle Keyboard Covers

For both, sign up by Oct 30, expire on Nov 30.

On the second offers, most are getting the Kindle Keyboard offers, but some are getting the Kindle Covers offer instead. Doesn't seem to matter if you own the Kindle (no keyboard), though, as I got the Kindle Keyboard offer on both of my accounts, even though the second account only has a Kindle (no keyboard) registered to it.

LOL! I am persistent - eventually got a $15 credit. It's half off one of the cheaper K4 covers, but I'll pick one of them out in a day or two (probably a more expensive one, sadly).

I also complained about them picking 13 books that US people can't buy, on an offer limited to only those in the US. Most of the books also have a US edition (different ASIN, often same publisher). I suggested they either fix the offer page or pick 13 different books -- it would be a small margin of error on the "thousands" a few days back, but is quite a larger percentage of just 100 horror titles.

How you do it? What you say. Did you call them? I want mine as well. I talk to one person already and they were no help.
