I'm starting to think that the letter in the serial number may be the factory it was manufactured at.

Aha! Good deduction, murg! There is a poster on another forum that has a new KT that was bought in Canada with (or it updated straight to) 2.1.1, implying that it might be Japanese (or, at any rate, for the Japanese market): https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...=1#post2219896 @p81ff). I'll ask if s/he will give us the data. It might give an additional clue.

Kobo will probably be manufacturing devices for all countries in the same factories. So, you may find that US, Canadian, European, Australian and Japanese Kobos are made in the same factory.

Well, one of my thoughts is that syber's anomalous machine may have a different letter than the others. If it does, we can then tentatively suggest that letter corresponds to a Japanese manufactured machine due to the circumstances. If it doesn't, then that letter can be tentatively suggested to be either Japan or Canada. We then have a (tentative) starting point to work out the others based on where they were bought (without taking anything away from murg's point about point-of-manufacture and point-of-sale maybe having nothing to do with each other, but there may be a pattern).

Or am I talking utter ?

You're always talking utter toilets Peak...

Mmm, but that would suggest that you do or don't get certain firmware updates depending on your device's serial number... while we've already experienced that with new updates, roll-outs are done according to location. So in other words (just like their annoying website ), dependent on the IP address that you use to connect to Kobo when updating.

Thus, perhaps Syber updated his new machine at work, and maybe he works at a huge (Japanese???) company that has a big fat weird network VPN'd to somewhere in Japan? Or something?

True - however, syber seems happy to give information, so maybe s/he would divulge that too.

It is all a bit straw-clutching at the moment!

Thanks, syber - I work in an environment where we are taught never to assume gender!

OK - the first ting I see is the 0110 hardware revision number, like mine and one other (WS64, maybe).

Could you send us the contents of the \.kobo\version file, too, syber (instructions here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...0&postcount=27).

Thanks.

I'll update the database when I get home and post v0.0.2 up later this evening.

Hahahaha funny

Update to explain: it's not funny you're a he, it's funny that you stated that in the list of all the other details

And you're sure you have a perfectly normal home network? Nothing Japanese about your IP address?

I don't think so, only N905B and C... but of course those three (including the J) are the only N905 ones so far
