No, not Steve Jobs. Definitely modern. Written within the last decade.

No to both of those. I'll give it a bit more time and reveal a bit later today.
I had to look up Rankin. Now I might be stuck reading a bunch of his stuff. |

His stuff is very funny, very English. A bit like Tom Holt, if you know him? Also well worth a read. I started with Expecting Someone Taller and never looked back.

I shall look up Tom Holt once you read Paul Auster and John Updike.

Well, I suppose it's still today.
These quotes are from Charles Stross's Halting State. A very fine read with laughs and just real enough to make you worry about technology. |

Sorry, not heard of the author or the book. I may well have a look now, though...once I've read Aster and Updike, of course.
How about another? |

It was nominated for Hugo and Locus awards in 2008. It was also nominated as a book club read for the Science Fiction category last November which ended up being A Canticle for Liebowitz. Halting State was the one that had me sucked in to vote for if I hadn't nominated other things I was really interested in reading.
Alrighty. Something else to guess. Quote:

I'm pretty sure it's Philip K. Dick since it mentions 'kipple', but I can't for the life of me place the passages.
