The Kindle Paperwhite's light won't turn off, but on its minimum setting it's so faint that it would only be (barely) visible in complete darkness. It's certainly not visible at all in any lighting situation in which you could actually read.

I've never found that reading on the PW was anything like reading on LCD displays.

But I also rarely read the PW in complete darkness; the advantage of the frontlight is that it counteracts the otherwise somewhat dim e-ink screens on e-readers.

I.e., when I first started using e-readers, I found that the 75w bulbs I used in my reading lights were not quite bright enough. I upgraded to 100w bulbs and it was approximately the same as reading a paperback with a 75w bulb.

But with the frontlight, I have no problem comfortably reading the PW with a 75w bulb, a 60w bulb, or even just from overhead lighting - the frontlight compensates, but without looking like it is illuminating the screen.
