You are confused on how-what a stylesheet does

A Stylesheet is not a generic part
You don't repair a HumVee with a Ford repair guide.

Just like the above repair, the stylesheet MUST match the exact HTML class USAGE within THE BOOK.

All 'calibre#' are assigned FIFO during conversion
Sometimes the same ones get used in various books. But only examining the code will tell.
Books that were NOT converted with Calibre (at any point) won't even have those classes.

I did not see a VIEWER setting to ignore publisher stylesheets like some devices have. In those, they use the reader settings (and lose all the eye candy publishers put inside the text )

Within the book (as coded). Every book is different. Even from the same Publisher, Series, Author...
Similar: yes, but only a code review of the individual book will tell

What the stylesheet.css you posted tells YOU, is what was done.
What pagestyles.CSS you posted says. that book had special fonts CALLED OUT ( the CSS needs to match (follow up) with the same

Code:
@font-face {
font-family: Quicksand;
font-weight: 300;
font-style: normal;
src: url(OEBPS/Fonts/00001.otf)
}
it was used in the (body) stylesheet
Code:
font-family: Quicksand, sans-serif;
Note, there were 2 weights (or strokes) used in Page styles. Agin usage must match

What YOU want to do is find the code in the New book and adjust the CSS selector to your taste ( use your fav' CSS as a value guide)

Is there a parent selector or someway to apply styles to full screen view?

I think I have the same question. How to get rid of these margins?

I tried

Code:
margin-right:0px; !important;
margin-left:0px; !important;
and such but nothing works.

I would like to make every second line in a different color for better readability
this does not work. why ?
p:nth-child(2) {
background: blue;
}

Quote:
Also I found this by somebody on github which is quite cool and works, but not perfectly.
Code:
p {
    font-size:24px;
    line-height:32px;
    background-image:url(data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAAIAAABgCAIAAAC46DQiAAAAYUlEQVQoz73SwQ3DIBAF0aetYDuAEtNJWoQKTAfOgcgS+M5pVnMafS0+X4JWHyAv4CbmdQDJICrthULfpYuckU52DshoUDd0KKuUZizc5zpJRlBpLxT6KtdFT3aO3H/wjx/oyySm/xnbdAAAAABJRU5ErkJggg==);
    background-position-y:8px;
    background-size:100% 128px;
    -webkit-background-clip:text;
    -webkit-text-fill-color:transparent
}

Here it is edited(note that fontsize + lineheight must be backgroundsize px:
Code:
p {
    font-size:30px;
    line-height:44px;
    background-image:url('data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAAMAAAASCAIAAAARwPPWAAAAAXNSR0IArs4c6QAAAARnQU1BAACxjwv8YQUAAAAJcEhZcwAADsMAAA7DAcdvqGQAAAAZdEVYdFNvZnR3YXJlAHBhaW50Lm5ldCA0LjAuMTCtCgrAAAAAOUlEQVQYV23HAQoAIAhD0ZVZ0UG6/w3NEBaBgw9vwDZgeaGZSCmhKlUo/PJGfFenlGqUUCXR3dO2A6rjJsk1UkqlAAAAAElFTkSuQmCC');
    background-position-y:0px;
    background-size:100% 74px;
    -webkit-background-clip:text;
    -webkit-text-fill-color:transparent
}
btw i found out the answer myself. css is not capable to select every second line.

how to make calibre ignore the css inside the book, and using external css instead?
I tried using user stylesheet to change the text indent and h1-h5 color,

Quote:
body {
font-family: "Nokia S60", Sans-serif;
background:#FFF9E3;
margin-right:75px;
margin-left:75px;
text-align:justify;
line-height:1.25em;
background-image:url("file:///C:/Program Files/Calibre2/resources/images/background.jpg")
}
@page {
margin-top: 0.8em;
margin-bottom: 0.8em;
margin-left: 0.4em;
margin-right: 0.4em;
}
h2 {
padding-top: 0;
display: block;
text-align: center;
}
h3 {
display: block;
font-color:#9f102e;
text-align: center;
margin-left: 2em;
margin-right: 2em;
}
.poemnotes {
display: block;
margin-left: 2em;
margin-right: 2em;
text-align: right;
}
p {
text-indent: 1em;
line-height: 1.3em;
margin-top: 0.7em;
margin-bottom: 0.7em;
text-align: justify;
}
p .imgBig {
display: block;
width: 100%;
text-align: center;
text-indent: 0;
}
p .imgBig img {
margin-bottom: 5px;
max-width: 100%;
}
p .imgSmall img {
display: inline-block;
max-width: 100%;
}
table {
max-width: 90%;
}

table td {
vertical-align: center;
text-align: center;
padding-left: 0.8em;
padding-right: 0.8em;
}
table p{
text-indent: 0;
}
table .row img {
max-width: 100px;
max-height: 100px;
}
table .rowSingleImg img {
max-width: 100%;
}
table .rowSingleImg td {
text-align: center;
}
the font is changed, and why the text-indent doesn't changes?

That is really strange and beats the purpose of that view IMHO. Strangely, it works fine in the "contents" section of a book.

Using mac btw.

Any ideas?
I have the same issue -- I checked for a response to this and didn't see one, but if I missed it, just point me in the right direction!

The issue concerns the settings for Configure Ebook Viewer > Text layout in paged mode > The number of pages to show on screen. In Portrait mode, I'd prefer to have 2 columns. But when I set this, and go to the Next or Previous Page in the Viewer, the view advances by one column only. That is, I read the first (left) column of text, and then the second (right) column; when I go to the Next Page, only the first column of text disappears. The second column moves over to the left and remains on screen, and a new column appears of text on the right.

What I expected is the same behaviour as turning the page in a physical book: both current "columns" (or "pages", if you prefer) go away and I now see two new columns/pages of text.

The impact of the Viewer's behaviour is that, apart from the first page (where I read both columns/pages of text), thereafter I only ever read one column/page (the right-hand one) before flipping the page: that's because every time I flip the page, the left-column ends up showing text I've already read. The same behaviour applies if you choose 3 or more columns: in each case, flipping the page only changes the right-most column.

One workaround is to hit next page multiple times: if you have a 2-column display, hit it twice; if 3 columns, hit it 3 times; and so on. This will then ensure that the entire display is filled with columns of fresh text.

Another workaround, and the one I use, is to keep the view to one column. I prefer this in Portrait mode anyway, But in Landscape mode, 2 columns would definitely be more convenient and "natural".

Any constructive advice would be appreciated!

FYI, I am using Calibre 2.76 on a Windows 10 device (Surface Book).

The next and previous page buttons/the Page up/page dn keys all turn the page, i.e. the number of columns visible on the page. They do not scroll a single column at a time. The mouse wheel, up/down keys on the other hand scroll a single column. The behavior of both the wheel and tapping is configurable in the Preferences->Page Flip section of the viewer preferences.

Thanks for your response, Kovid (and thanks also for Calibre, which is absolutely fabulous!).

The scrolling functions do operate as you've described, so I appreciate the clarification. Unfortunately, I use Calibre on a Surface Book, and I tend to run the Viewer with the screen detached (in tablet mode, or what Microsoft calls Clipboard mode). In that case, I do not have access to the next/previous buttons. My only option is to tap the screen. You mentioned that the behaviour of tapping is configurable. Here is what I see in the dialog box:

Click image for larger version

Name:	Calibre_prefs.jpg
Views:	802
Size:	64.0 KB
ID:	161065

For whatever reason, the dialog box text is not very clear, so the options are a little difficult to understand (I wonder if this is some artefact of the screen resolution?). What I found is that:

(a) the first checkbox, "Tapping on the pa..." enables or disables the page flip function. If unchecked, tapping the screen has no effect. If checked, tapping the screen flips the page, but its exact behaviour depends on the next option, "Mouse wheel f...".

(b) The second checkbox, "Mouse wheel f...", determines whether tapping the screen advances by an entire page or just one column.

So with both those options checked, I get the behaviour I desire -- all good. The difficulty was more to do with the readability of the dialog, and perhaps the wording of the second checkbox (to make it clearer that these functions affect tapping as well as scrolling with the mouse).

I haven't had to use the other options in that dialog box, but the purpose of the "Scrolling in flow mode" graphic is unclear to me. Still, you've resolved my issue, so thanks again.

Hi, I have been reading this thread but need help in order to reduce the font size of headers in Calibre Viewer.
I would also like to know if the style can be applied to downloaded news.

Is there a CSS code I can use to apply a color gradient like in the beeline reader? With color gradients horizontally along the lines of text?
