I believe this is best sorted out in the nomination and voting process. Cloud Atlas was in my opinion a valid offering as a Sci-Fi/Fantasy book. JSWolf on the other hand vigorously disagreed. So this is one persons (mine) opinion on which of the first 15 books from the Goodreads Popular Modern Fiction list would belong in what I see as the Modern Fiction category proposed here:

The list of top 15:
  1. The Kite Runner
  2. The Da Vinci Code
  3. Life of Pi
  4. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time
  5. The Lovely Bones
  6. The Time Traveler's Wife
  7. Memoirs of a Geisha
  8. Fight Club
  9. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (Millennium, #1)
  10. The Help
  11. The Road
  12. Angels and Demons
  13. Atonement
  14. Middlesex
  15. American Psycho
Books from this list that I would exclude:
  • The Kite Runner
  • The Da Vinci Code
  • The Lovely Bones
  • The Time Traveler's Wife
  • Memoirs of a Geisha
  • The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (Millennium, #1)
  • The Road
  • Angels and Demons

I should also say that among the books that I did not exclude there are some that I would never nominate or vote for. I can't make an argument that those don't fit the category though.

Thank you!

I understand and agree with it being sorted out during the nominations, I was just trying to get a better understanding of the "genre" as its not one I would normally look for, specifically.

I nominate orlok's Choice as a category. The concept is orlok will give us a selection of upcoming books on their TBR list to vote on (say five). First round of voting decides it and in the case of a tie, orlok chooses April's selection. It's sort of like Lottery. I find the book's streaming through my GoodReads updates rather interesting.

I'm going to second that because it sounds like an interesting experiment.

In that case, it's a pity that orlok's screenname isn't "Sophie".

One more nomination and we are one step closer to basking in orlok's wisdom! Actually issybird was high on my list too, but orlok nudged her out with a crazier diversity.

I would move that Lottery work more like what I propose in that the selected forumer gives a list of books to vote on.

I wouldn't have any problems with that change.

And, I will go ahead and third orlok's Choice.

That's an interesting idea; nominate it if you want it! It sounds sort of like a "Lottery Plus" if I'm understanding correctly - the winner chooses the poll nominees, and then everyone else votes in the poll on them.

^That's the theory. I thought of it while remembering a couple of 'what should I read next' polls where I listed some titles I was considering and had the forum decide where to next.
