Eigentlich ist die Übersetzung ins Mittelhochdeutsche doch genial, natürlich ist das keine Übersetzung fürs "normale" Publikum, ich sehe das als Spielerei unter Sprachwissenschaftlern.

Wer kann denn so etwas überhaupt?

Ärgerlich sind generell die Übersetzungen von Personen- oder Ortsnamen ins Deutsche, wenn es nicht unbedingt nötig ist oder wenn diese komplett neu erfunden werden. Das kann dann sehr viel Atmosphäre wegnehmen.

Das ist dann aber eine bewusste Entscheidung.

Ich weiß glaube ich, was du meinst, aber in diesem speziellen Fall geht’s nicht anders, da in dem Kapitel die Entwicklung der Sprache parallel zu der eines Kindes im Mutterleib abgebildet wird (inklusive Nachgeburt!).

Gibt es das immer noch? Ich dachte, das hätte man irgendwann im letzten Jahrhundert abgeschafft.

Ok, das wusste ich natürlich nicht. Das Werk von Joyce ist mir nur wenig bekannt. Hast du daran ein besonderes Interesse?

Im Fantasybereich ist das immer noch Standard. Bei GRRRRR Martin war die erste Übersetzung mit den Originalnamen. Als er dann durch die Fernsehserie populär wurde, haben sie alles neu übersetzt mit eingedeutschten Namen. Ächt. Ächz. Da bin ich dann schon froh, dass ichs im Original lesen kann.

Ansonsten ist mir eingefallen, dass ich einen Teil der Pooh's Corners in Form eines gedruckten Sammelbandes besitze, und so konnte ich eine Kolumne ausfindig machen, in der HR die Schwierigkeiten des Übersetzens aufs Trefflichste veranschaulicht. (Statt Perssön muss man sich da bitte Perssón denken, und statt ma-S. cho ein schlichtes macho.)

Sehr wenige Leute, würde ich sagen. Ich werde mich auch schwer hüten, so was zu kritisieren. Die Entscheidung, das so und nicht anders zu übersetzen, finde ich aber doch etwas überraschend. Irgendwie finde ich auch, dass das Original nicht ganz so archaisch daherkommt.

Was mich an Übersetzungen (vor allem aus dem Englischen) stört, sind eigentlich sehr "triviale" Dinge: Wortwörtlich übersetzte idiomatische Wendungen, "englischer" Satzbau (im schlimmsten Fall englische Grammatik), "falsche Freunde" (Wörter, die im Deutschen sehr ähnlich sind, aber etwas anderes bedeuten) und natürlich Grammatikfehler jeder Art.

Erstaunlicherweise ist das wichtigste "Werkzeug" eines Übersetzers nämlich nicht die Fremdsprache (obwohl er dort natürlich auch möglichst sattelfest sein sollte), sondern die eigene Muttersprache. Und wenn es dort hapert, hört es bei mir leider auf, weil ich nicht zu den Glücklichen gehöre, denen das nicht auffällt.

Wobei ich zum eigentlichen Thema dieses Threads zurückkehre: Doctor Sleep werde ich wohl unterbrechen (nicht abbrechen) und irgendwann im Original weiterlesen. Der Genitiv verschwindet zwar zusehends aus der deutschen Sprache, aber in der Schriftsprache sollte man ihn trotzdem korrekt anwenden können. (Das gilt natürlich nicht für Dialoge.)

Mich konnte das Ganze dann auch wenig begeistern, viel zu viel militärischer Jargon und Personen, die mir mehr oder weniger egal waren. Erstaunt bin ich etwas über die Begeisterung im amerikanischen Raum, was ja dann vermutlich zur Verfilmung geführt hat, aber ich verstehe so manches nicht.

Leider wurde das Buch auch für mich in einer zu stark spielerischen Form gesprochen. David Nathan macht das zwar hervorragend, aber es gefällt mir trotzdem weniger, wenn man mir auf dem Hundespaziergang plötzlich ins Ohr schreit.

Weiter geht es mit "Eismond" von Jan Costin Wagner, was ich auch für den Buchclub vorgeschlagen hatte. Das scheint aber stark gekürzt zu sein. amazon

Natürlich wird auch noch konventionell gelesen, da habe ich gerade "Der Wolkenatlas" beendet (siehe Buchclub-Extra) und schon mal mit dem "Mondstein" von Wilkie Collins (April-Leserunde) angefangen. Ich habe hier aber noch 3 Bücher liegen, die ich auch noch irgendwann mal beenden möchte.

Ich habe mich endlich an den Titel der kurzen Besprechung eines "Deutsch-Französisch-Deutsch"-Wörterbuchs durch Herrn Peter Panter alias Kurt Tucholsky erinnern können, die mir seit vorgestern im Hinterkopf saß.

Und mich - wieder - an meinem Mittagskaffee verschluckt, als ich nun Jonathan's Wörterbuch las.

Nur heute bzw. gestern?

Ebenfalls zurück zu den Büchern: Doctor Sleep werde ich mir wohl als Hörbuch holen, die englischsprachige Lesung soll sehr gut sein (was die Hörprobe bestätigt), aber als nächstes kommt erst mal Collins' Moonstone dran.

Mit den Memoiren von Lady Trent (A Natural History of Dragons) bin ich fast durch, es macht mir immer noch sehr viel Spaß und ich werde auf jeden Fall den nächsten Band der Serie, der gerade erschienen ist, auch hören.

Gelesen wird natürlich auch bei mir, in der letzten Woche hauptsächlich Kurzgeschichten in Robert J. Sawyers Iterations-Sammlung. Das habe ich vor relativ langer Zeit schon einmal gelesen und die Geschichten haben für mich nichts von ihrer "Anziehungskraft" verloren.

Da ich auch immer mal wieder einen Artikel in Jo Waltons What Makes This Book so Great lese, habe ich Lust bekommen, Bujolds Vorkosigan Saga weiterzulesen und habe gestern Abend The Vor Game angefangen. Bisher gefällt es mir sehr gut.

Als Gutenacht-Geschichte höre ich seit ein paar Tagen eines meiner absoluten Lieblingsbücher: Among Others, auch von Jo Walton. Die deutsche Übersetzung (In einer anderen Welt) ist übrigens gerade für den Kurt-Laßwitz-Preis nominiert worden.

So, heute in der Mittagspause bin ich endlich mit Terry Pratchetts Guards! Guards! fertig geworden, mit dem ich viel Spaß hatte. Charaktere, Handlung, Humor, hier passte einfach alles.

Der einzige Makel, den ich bisher aber bei den meisten vorigen Discworld-Büchern in mehr oder weniger starker Form auch schon verspürte, ist, dass ich kurz nach der Hälfte des Buches an einen Punkt gelange, an dem ich mir denke, dass die Geschichte ja nun bald mal zuende gehen könnte. Meist findet sich dort ein dramatischer Höhepunkt, von dem aus es meinetwegen geradewegs (und angetrieben vom Schwung der Handlung auch flinken Schrittes) zur Auflösung gehen könnte. Der Weg dahin gestaltet sich aber leider regelmäßig länger und insbesondere langatmiger als erhofft.

Da man bei Discworld-Büchern wie bei den meisten Parodien nichts so recht ernst nehmen kann - bis auf einige der Seitenhiebe natürlich - bleibt das Ganze auch ein etwas zu abstrakt-intellektuelles Vergnügen, und auf Dauer fehlt mir da die "Nestwärme" einer gut konstruierten Welt, in der man sich so richtig zu Hause fühlen kann. Aus diesem Grunde mache ich jetzt erst einmal eine Pause mit der Discworld und lese zwischendurch mal etwas anderes. Ob ich allerdings bis Dienstag warten kann, um mit dem Moonstone anzufangen, weiß ich noch nicht. Mal sehen, vielleicht läuft mir vorher noch was nettes, kurzes über den Weg...

Bei den Discworld-Büchern brauche ich zwischendurch auch eine Pause, allerdings habe ich für dieses Jahr ein oder zwei davon eingeplant.

Ich werde wohl doch erst am Dienstag mit The Moonstone anfangen, ich habe noch ein kurzes Hörbuch dazwischen geschoben: The Mysterious Howling von Maryrose Wood. Das ist extrem leichte Lektüre, ein Kinderbuch über drei Kinder, die als "Wildlinge" im Wald von Wölfen aufgezogen werden, bis Lord Ashton sie während einer Jagd findet und bei sich aufnimmt. Hm, ich denke, ich weiß, worauf das "geheimnisvolle Heulen" hinauslaufen wird...

Das Buch wird von Katherine Kellgren gelesen, was immer ein großer Spaß ist.
