Reducing file size for straight-text epub?

Happy New Year, everyone! I have an epub of an 800-page print book. The epub file is 1.9mb, but I'm getting an error message from the distributor that "These titles have individual HTML files that exceed the 300k limit."

This is straight text--anyone know how to reduce the file size?

You need to open the book in Sigil. Then press control enter often enough so that the big long document is reduced to no file longer than 300k. Calibre uses 260k or so by default.

Many find it helpful to simply press control enter on the last period of a chapter. This will start a new file at the beginning of the following chapter. Doing by chapters can make it easier to edit, and load and display in lower powered devices.

Thanks! I will try to use Sigil here. But any other option? Just to have a back-up plan? )

Sigil will do what you want. So really, no need for a back-up plan.

I would say to break the text as the different sections, chapters, dedication, copyright, about the author, etc. Usually this works well unless you have a chapter that is just that big.

You have a table of contents, right? Then split it at each title. This way they'll start from the top of the page, like printed books usually do. Something else you could try is trimming the fat, like if you exported from Word, or something like that... then there's probably a lot of garbage in it that need cleaning up (like "mso" tags and such).

If you have both an internal (list of links to different bits) and an external (ncx file), delete the internal ToC. You don't need it.
