Moominpappa at sea is only 30p on Amazon.co.uk

It looks nicely formatted. My 9 year old son likes the Moomin books, so this looks like a bargain to have on the Kindle to me.

Quick question. Are Kindle UK books available to US customers? I.E. can I use these UK freebies on my Kindle (when it arrives)?

Hi

As I understand it you can have a UK Amazon account and a US one at the same time (I certainly do). Some books are geo locked so if I try to download from the US site with my UK account it says no.

The Kindle like a Nook is attached to an account.

If you wanted UK books, you would need a UK account, which involves giving a UK address. The book would download to your UK account so you would need to load it to a computer first to sideload to your Kindle.

Not sure on the DRM aspects whether you would need to unswindle them first and of course it goes without saying I am not sure if you are allowed to remove the DRM in the first place!

If you only wanted UK books you could reregister your Kindle to the UK account. Bear in mind that UK ebooks currently carry tax at 17.5% so you may not find it cheaper than the US once you have converted your dollars.

I think that's the key to my question. While I have ordered from Amazon UK (my Amazon US account and pw worked), I want my Kindle attached to my US account. So I shouldn't plan on books from UK.

BTW, is a Preview of a book an excerpt or the complete book?

A preview is almost always the first few chapters of a book. Often more than what you get with a sample, but only seldom a stand-alone title of it's own.

I think this has been free on Amazon.com previously and it's now available on Amazon UK

Soul Identity by Dennis Batchelder
You can't take it with you...but what if you could? Most people believe their souls outlive their bodies. Most people would find an organization that tracks their souls into the future and passes on their banked money and memories compelling. Scott Waverly isn't like most people. He spends his days finding and fixing computer security holes. And Scott is skeptical of his new client's claim that they have been calculating and tracking soul identities for almost twenty-six hundred years. Are they running a freaky cult? Or a sophisticated con job? Scott needs to save Soul Identity from an insider attack. Along the way, he discovers the importance of the bridges connecting people's lives.

The Great Deleveraging: Economic Growth and Investing Strategies for the Future, by Oded Shenkar & Chip Dickson

Book Description
In a World of Debt and Bubbles, Learn Important Lessons to Navigate These Turbulent Times

In the past decade, the United States experienced two periods of excessive growth followed by two massive financial collapses: the technology and housing bubbles. Both were caused by illusions of growth and wealth creation: Much of the foundation was not real. As an investor, how can you distinguish between "fake" growth and the real thing? What disciplines help you find solid returns and provide warning signs about bubbles?

Former Wall Street analyst, strategist, and Associate Director of Equity Research Chip Dickson and leading global business scholar Oded Shenkar first identify the policies and characteristics of societies most likely to generate real economic growth and investor wealth. Next, they outline specific lessons learned about bubbles and growth from nearly a century of investment returns. Finally, they identify global markets and sectors that appear well poised for sustainable growth.

In the wake of massive debt creation, history's greatest deleveraging is now underway. For many investors, the next decade will be brutal. This book's messages are designed to help achieve real profits and create real wealth. They are meant to help you navigate a challenging environment ... and, hopefully, thrive.

Fire Your Stock Analyst!: Analyzing Stocks On Your Own, by Harry Domash

Book Description
Pick your own stocks—and outperform the experts! San Francisco Chronicle investment columnist Harry Domash has crafted a start-to-finish approach to stock selection that draws on winning techniques from the world's best money managers, uses readily available information, and is easy to learn if you're willing to invest the time. Whether you're a growth or value style investor, this book will show you exactly how to identify the best stocks for your portfolio. You'll learn to assess everything that affects a company's stock price—profitability, underlying financial strength, competitive position, industry, business plans, management competence, upside/downside potential, and more. Like no other book, Fire Your Stock Analyst! cuts to the chase, capturing the essence of today's most successful stock-picking strategies. It's all you need to liberate yourself from the "experts" and become a more successful investor.

You'll find

* Disciplined, step-by-step strategies for every intelligent investor
* No "get-rich-quick" formulas; just practical techniques you can really use
* Separate selection strategies for value and growth investors
* Assessing valuation, risk, profitability, management competence, and long-term growth potential
* Using the analysts' recommendations for your benefit—not theirs
* Crucial issues most investment books ignore—including when to sell

Consistently picking winning stocks isn't magic—you can do it. It simply takes knowledge, skills, and discipline. If you've already got the discipline, this book will give you the knowledge and the skills.

I'm just blown away by a publisher who sets a price of $24.99 for a short story; same as the undiscounted price of the full-length hardback book:

They really didn't set a print price for the short story - you can't even buy it that way. Instead, they linked the short story to the hardback, as if they were different editions of the same book (it's the same thing they do with "free previews" that are just sample chapters); this way, the sales count just like a full sale of the book, when Amazon figures out sales rankings (or the author boasts of a million ebooks sold).
