What is KF8? and Font issue
Hi, I read a thread about getting Kindle to display covers for my ebooks. It meantioned KF8 which is what Calibre does to get the covers i guess.
OK a first, I converted my books from ePUB to AZW3. This did not produce covers. When I had Calibre send the books to my Kindle, it said my books were in it the correct format and then, it produced covers for all the selected books. I don't know why didn't create the right format first time. Now the problem is the fonts on some of the books is too big and sometimes it gives me MOBI files which aren't nearly as good as the AZW3 files. How can I correct the font issue? How can I get covers but always get AZW3 files instead of MOBI files (as is the same sometimes with Autoformat)? THanks guys! If I can fix this issue, I'm certainly going to give another donation because this will make my Kindle so much more enjoyable just seeing the covers on my books. |

You can see from the attached picture that the converted AZW3 file is much larger than the original.
Ok I figured out how to limit the Send to Device format by clicking on the down arrow. I now allows me to select the specific format. But I still can't control the font size in the converted file. Last edited by maurices5000; 06-13-2015 at 01:42 AM. |

Also download the Quality Check plugin and select the Fix ASIN for Kindle Fire option. (For more details, see this post.) |

Thanks a million! Two additional questions:
1) If I save the file to DISK it will save the cover image to the file? and I can transfer the file manually later and it will have the cover already attached? (This sounds like the best option so that the cover is always with the file.) 2) Just to be sure, when you say: "If you don't like embedded fonts," will this keep all the original ePUB settings? Thanks! I'll install the plugins as soon as I get some clarifications. I'm scared. :-) |

BTW, MR member Quiris has created a standalone program that'll extract cover thumbnails from Kindle books already stored on the Kindle. If you use the Modify ePub plugin, it'll automatically create a backup copy of the original ePub file with an original_epub extension. It'll be up to you to either archive these original_epub files or to archive the original files before processing them with the Modify ePub plugin. |

If you can bear with me one more time. I think we may be talking pass each other just a little.
I think I understand everything you are saying in your answer to Question 1. I read the thread completely also. Basically if I want covers, I need to use Calibre to transfer the books to my Kindle. If I have books already on my Kindle without covers, I can use Quiris to extract and add them. The answer to the Question 2, I don't understand you at all. Archiving the original is not a problem. (It seems to be a different issue from what I'm saying.) The problem is when I convert from EPUB to AZW3, the font is too big. On those books I want Calibre to either not change the fonts or allow me to reduce the font size a little without destroying the formatting. I hope you understand me. I'm going to try these plugins when I get back home. I hope they fix these two problems with font size and cover. Thanks! |

If the text in the converted AZW3 file is also larger on your Kindle, the epub designer most likely used fixed font sizes, which the Calibre book viewer and other apps might ignore. However, without seeing the original epub styles and the converted AZW3 styles it's really hard to tell what's causing the problem. If you want to play detective right-click an ebook that you've converted to the AZW3 format in Calibre and select Edit book from the context menu. (This will open Calibre Editor.) Enable the Live CSS option in the View menu and click a random paragraph. This should display some Live CSS style information in the lower right corner. Take a screen capture, edit the converted AZW3 file, click the same paragraph and take another screenshot of the style information. |

Any suggestions? I don't want to spend a lot of time editing these details just to change every book I encounter that displays too big a font.

Notice the difference in this set of rules
Original: <p class="st"><b>“Bearing Thorough Witness” About God’s Kingdom</b></p> p.st, .document .ct { font-family: "Arial", Helvetica, sans-serif !important; font-size: 1.25em; text-align: center; line-height: 1.1em; margin-top: 0.5em; margin-right: 0em; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-left: 0em; -webkit-hyphens:none; } The AZW file: <p class="st2"><a class="pcalibre1 pcalibre2 pcalibre pcalibre3 calibre5" id="page3"></a><b class="calibre4">“Bearing Thorough Witness” About God’s Kingdom</b></p> .st2 { -webkit-hyphens: none; display: block; font-family: "Arial", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 1.29032em; line-height: 1.2; orphans: 2; text-align: center; widows: 2; margin: 0.36em 0 1em } The other styles don't seem to have a direct impact on the font-size in the AWZ they are just margins, bold, color etc. |

It looks like the font sizes were indeed changed in the AZW3 files. Theoretically this shouldn't happen unless you've added an additional CSS file or CSS rules in Calibre. Select Preferences > Common Options > Look & Feel and make sure that no CSS file paths or CSS rules are shown under Extra CSS.
If Extra CSS is empty, try converting your ePubs with Kindle Previewer/KindleGen, split it with the Calibre KindleUnpack plugin in Mobi7 and AZW3 components and have a look at the AZW3 file. If the KindleGen generated styles look more or less OK, you may want to ask a moderator to move this whole thread to the Calibre Conversion forum, because you might have found a rare Calibre bug that only Kovid Goyal can help you with. EDIT: I converted the original file myself and can confirm that Calibre does indeed change the paragraph font size from 16px in the original file to 20px in the converted AZW3 file. A KindleGen generated AZW3 file doesn't have this issue. There appears to be a bug in the AZW3 converter. Last edited by Doitsu; 06-14-2015 at 01:46 AM. |

I've attached an image file. There doesn't appear to be anything there. The Line height is increased 120%. Might that be the problem?
I attached an image. Thanks very much for your help. |

Have you tried Disable font size rescaling? This is the top checkbox in the Look and Feel tab.
