Amazon Quietly Discontinuing Kindle DX

Looks like the Kindle DX won't be back.

I'm actually surprised that the DX has lasted this long. Amazon has never really supported it.

Yep, saw an article on this, it always seemed too pricy for me anyway....

Amazon stopped supporting it about a month after it was released. I remember getting mine and being excited and then hearing about the K3. I still had time to return the DXG under the 30 day rule, and I ordered mine the day it was announced, if I wanted to.

I think there was one update after that and that is it. It had to be the fastest drop of support for a product that I have seen.

They probably realized that the DX doesn't help them sell stuff, since it's really for reading sideloaded PDFs and the like.

Sad ... it was the perfect screen for programming books and poetry, eink, I mean.

But I sold mine over a year ago. It was the forgotten child for Amazon.

They intended the DXG to be used for textbooks and then came the tablets. At least, that is my take on it.

I bought a back-up one when it was on Woot, or on Black Friday, can't recall - but I'm keeping them for reading poetry, plays, etc.

If you're still in the market for one, keep an eye on Woot - they'll probably dump their remaining stock there.

I love my DX. I'm going to be very sad when it dies. Hopefully it will be several years before that happens.

I think that's exactly right. People knew that Apple was making a tablet, but most assumed it was going to cost $1,000 and run a full computer OS; most people were caught flat-footed when it's price was announced at $499.

I think Amazon's response was really amazing - the iPad came out in April; by August, Amazon was shipping the K3, which was about $100 cheaper than the K2, had a pearl screen, and a few other improvements. Amazon's main message was: this does not compete with the iPad: it is focused entirely on reading; it's smaller, lighter, has much better battery power, a better screen, etc. It's just astonishing to me how fast they moved (and all against the backdrop of Agency pricing being introduced and people predicting that Apple would own 90% of the e-book market).

There probably ought to be a business school case study on Amazon's response to the iPad, if there isn't already...

Unfortunately, this didn't leave much room for the DX.

I bought one at Staples when they were clearing them out for $160. I use it now and then for technical books, but it mostly collects dust. I'm not too surprised.
