How do I install Overdrive?
I had a Sony reader and then got the IPad for Christmas but not thrilled about the size for long term reading. DH surprised me with KF last night but each of the Overdrive apps that come up in a search say "unavailable". Is this something I am going to have to "side load"? Never even heard of that until the last 10 minutes. I'm half tempted to take the Fire back if it is going to be that much trouble. (I'm older and not too techno savvy, just want it to work out of the box )

First, did you know that most library ebooks can be sent to your Kindle account and read on the Kindle Fire?
But if you still want the OverDrive app, you can download it from OverDrive and install it yourself: http://www.overdrive.com/software/omc/default.aspx |

Just know that if you choose to side load, the icon will pixelate on the KF's default launcher. But you can open the APK, edit the icon to a bigger sized one, and it'll be like as if it came from Amazon.
If anyone ever needs help with that and doesn't want to use Go Launcher as a easy fix, don't hesitate to ask me. It only takes less than three minutes to do it. |

For some people a full tablet is preferred, it gives kinda the best of both worlds.

If the library offers Kindle books, which more and more in the US now do, then it's a built in feature.

Am I allowed to post stuff like that here? If you search, you'll probably find it.
It's basically using a utility that unzips your APK (because that's what an app pretty much is, a fancy archive), and then you go into the folder it gives you, find another folder called res and open another called drawable-mdpi. There should be a file called icon.png which you just toss and replace with a 192x192 icon. Then you zip it up with the program and throw it back into your Fire. Everything's on XDA. . There are some apps, like games, that won't let you do this, it throws up an error once you push it back in and open it up, otherwise people would modify games and we'd have Angry Beagles or whatever. But apps like Flipboard are perfectly fine. |
