Wonder if there's going to be any kind of a list of libraries with such availability.

I just did a search at Philadelphia library and they have 116 DRM free epubs and 8 DRM free PDFs. All the PDFs also have an epub version.

A problem with the open epub books.... you can not return them early.

Why do you even need to return DRM free ebooks? Is there still a waiting list for these? Still sounds like DRM to me.

Philadelphia Library also has something else that I hadn't noticed before; They recently added a bunch of travel (I think) ADE epubs, and under "Available Copies" and "Library Copies", it says "Always Available".

Need to return the ebooks early :
So others can have access to them. To open the option for you to check out another book. |

I'm curious about the language used to motivate people to respect licensing terms, if there will be email sent to remind people to delete the content, etc. It's only a 'problem' insofar as you may pick a lending period that turns out to be much longer than it takes to actually read the book, denying the opportunity for another patron to borrow the book. I assume one still has the usual 7/14/21 day checkouts provided by the library. A reasonable mitigation might be to disallow 21 day checkouts for non-DRM ebooks (if they're normally provided by the library). |

This is a pleasant surprise. Though the list of publishers taking part isn't too surprising.
