Hmm… Chalion isn't so much as following a particular plan on the part of the protagonists, as anticipating and thwarting the plans of the antagonists, so YMMV, but there is a whole bunch of conniving along the way (and amusing stuff, too), and the main character is a pretty thoughtful and relatively intellectual guy.

If you're willing to do some TV-watching, a pretty good mini-series somewhat in the vein of what you're looking for is The Politician's Wife (Wikipedia), where a cheated-on UK Minister's wife schemes to get a thorough revenge on her husband by cleverly and underhandedly sabotaging and usurping his political aspirations while maintaining a look of sweet-eyed supportive innocence throughout, and goes from victim to vanquisher in the process.

If your local library has DVDs and is reasonably well-stocked, it might have this since IIRC it was aired on PBS at one time and libraries love to get in PBS DVDs, and it won a bunch of TV awards as well.

I love just about all forms of entertainment media. I'll check it out.
