"Why does it take so long for calibre to delete 1000 books at a time?"

1 second per book or one second at the end of the batch of books? I take the first is easier to implement. I'm not sure the trade off is worth it to alter a recycling bin icon. But not my call or headache.
Thanks for checking out and locating the source of this issue shared observation. |

moving to recycle bin happens in the background, so the extra second shouldn't matter at all. But I am looking into an alternate solution -- keeping a single worker process alive whose job is to only move files to the recycle bin.

That can of worms was a lot deeper than I thought it was when I opened it.
Many thanks for persevering through it. |

If calibre had an option to do permanent deletes rather than moves to the bin I would already be using it... does calibre have such an option? I have a track record of missing things

Even though you've already figured it out (I think?!), I'll just confirm that I too am running the 32-bit version of Calibre (I'm sure I read there was no reason to change to the 64-bit version when it was first released?).

Just to confirm, it's working great now in today's new version. Thanks!
