Newbie recomendations please

Hi Everyone, I'm new here and looking forward to hearing about some great reading experieces. I'm using mobipocket reader on a nokia n97 Mini.
I really love a good cosy (prefer brittish rather than american, eg set in the cotwalds) type of mystery. Can anyone reccomend anything. I've love Agatha Raisin, Agatha Christie, anything along those lines kind of detective story. Would love your help.
Thank you

Welcome to the site, lyric39!

I like Agatha Raisin, too, but cannot think of a similar British series at the moment. I'm sure you'll get a slew of responses soon though. If I can think of anything, I'll be back.

Some thoughts you might like: Rhys Bowen (Royal series), Martha Grimes (police, but sort of cosy), Heron Carvic- very old- Miss Seeton series, Laurie King's Sherlock Holmes/Mary Russell series, Dorothy Gilman- Mrs Pollifax series, Nancy Atherton- Aunty Dimity series. For a funny mystery series, American, try Evelyn Smith's Miss Melville series.

Rita Mae Brown has a series of "cat themed" books that are cosy mysteries.

Deborah Donnelly has a cozy series around an amateur detective (and professional wedding planner) named Carnegie Kincaid. I think the first title in the series is "May the Best Man Die."

I am stuck at the title. Are you a newbie to the literature? Then start with classics. Read Crime and Punishment. If you are new to british mystery scene, there is not much I can tell you. Read The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins. Golden Age of Detective Fiction is old dead after all.

Full Dark House by Christopher Fowler

Edgy, suspenseful, and darkly comic, here is the first novel in a riveting new mystery series starring two cranky but brilliant old detectives whose lifelong friendship was forged solving crimes for the London Police Department's Peculiar Crimes Unit. In Full Dark House, Christopher Fowler tells the story of both their first and last case—and how along the way the unlikely pair of crime fighters changed the face of detection.

You might consider the New Zealand author Ngaio Marsh. She wrote her Detective Alleyn novels from 1934 all the way until the year of her death in 1982. Alleyn was a detective inspector in London. If you like Christie (which i do), you'll love Marsh. She was a theatre lover and you see the theatre pop up in many of her novels. for a list, you an have a look at her bibliograpy HERE.

I had forgotten to list MC Beaton- one of my old favorites- I like her Hamish MacBeth series as well as the first 4-5 Agatha Raisin mysteries. If you are into Egyptology, the Elizabeth Peters series (lst is Crocodile on the Sandbank)- hilarious. For a continuation of Sherlock Holmes mysteries, where he gets a new sidekick, try Laurie King- lst is The Beekeeper's Apprentice.
