Pay to preview?

"Amazon May Want Customers to Pay to Search Inside the Book."

This doesn't seem like the smartest of marketing moves. It strikes me as so bizarre that quite frankly I wonder if the article's author even has her facts right or, if she does, is she drawing the correct conclusions from those facts? However, if it is true, can paying to sample e-books be far behind?

Obviously, this will presage a changing of their name to The Nile.

The author describes the notion as a 'sop to publishers'. Anything but! I'm not the only publisher who thinks free browsing is not only a tradtional reader right but a vital promotional and marketing tool.

I would hate to see the 'search within' rights withdrawn. Amazon's whole concept is customer-centric and this would go right against their policy.

And Amazon doesn't need sops to publishers. They make the rules as they go along and publishers must like it or lump it because the organisation has become key to treebook sales.

Best. Neil

I would argue that the author's inference is incorrect and alarmist. The patent filing, as noted, was from 2004 and I don't see any evidence in the article that lends any credence to any plans to charge for previews or to "Search Inside the Book" (as stated in the article title).

A. "What's the book like?"

That's what I think. The filing of a patent could have other implications. I can't imagine why Amazon would want to drastically change a system that has proved so profitable to them.

so would I get the money back after the preview if I didn't like it? would it be applied to my purchase if I did?

does this mean we will start having to put down a deposit everytime we walk into a brick and mortar store? "20 bucks to touch the books"
