broken screen kindle upcycling ideas?
Hi all & thanks to all the knowhow I found here.
I came across a kindle with a broken screen, so imagine an ebook reader without e-ink display and started jb'ing it. A few lines are still visible, so I managed to activate usbNetwork. So now I am trying to figure out what kind of new job to give to the device. Its great to have the rootshell, but now I have to figure how things work on the kindle. I did some openwrt hacking before.. Having no display has a few implications: configuration should mainly rely on files in /mnt/us or on some kind of web interface on the local lan. (or voice guide menus???) One idea is to use launchpad + mplayer and make it an internetradio. I'd really like to be able to use the 3G module some way. Not with the amazon sim card but with my own local telco sim card! How does the kindle connect to 3G? I haven't found any relating stuff and also couldnt find any hint in general how to use an anydata 3G module in linux. has anybody managed to get 3G data connections working with their mobile phone's sim card (or other?) or get the wwan module running in a netbook device? Also, is there any chance to get usb host mode working? the hardware seems to support all kind of usb modes, on the wwan module socket there is probably an usb host connection that could be used instead of the wwan module ... would be happy to get some ideas & input from you! |

Some more research and a reboot with my other sim card shows:
the 3G Modem seems only be visible as a device when a sim card is inserted. then it appears, but disappears before I can get hold of it. (any idea if its disabled by usbnetwork mode?) dmesg |grep USB: Quote:

wancontrol;
wanon/wanoff makes it "appear/disappear", load/unload module. pppstart/pppkill... all the stuff seems to live in /var/local/wan and /opt/wan, with a few ppp scripts in /etc/ppp. I don't actually have an Anydata module in my unit at the moment to look at, but when I had looked at it, I got the idea there was a firmware download necessary... but regardless the wancontrol takes care of all that. I am unsure exactly how the Internet "connect" gets triggered, but I think the Kindle really tries to avoid using the 3G, /etc/init.d/wand was always unloading the #$%'n module when I was on WiFi. |
