Pocketbook IQ 701 recognized as Pandigital Novel

Hello,

Using 0.7.35 on Max OSX, the pocketbook 701 shows up as a Pandigital Novel. The device debug output clearly says Pocketbook though. When sending a book to the device's SD card, no books are actually sent. I'm assuming these might be related.

I can post the device debug output later if needed, just don't have the osx laptop with me at the moment.

Thanks

The debug output will be necessary. My guess is it's using the same device ids as the Pandigital device.

My IQ shows up as an IQ. Do you by any chance have your IQ rooted? When I tried to root mine (I didn't get very far) and had USB debug connected, Calibre acted kinda weird with it--pretty much what you're saying. It showed as a Pandigital Novel, it didn't show any books at all either on the device or on the SD card, it didn't show the books in the library as being on the device, it pretty much didn't work at all. As soon as I gave up on rooting and disconnected the USB debug, it went back to normal. It is now seen as an IQ, the library shows which books are where, I can send books to my little heart's delight.

I know Kovid added the IQ on the last upgrade, and he even switched the internal sd card and the external one so we can use the external card to store books instead of being limited to the smaller internal card.

OK, try turning off the usb debug before connecting to calibre. For me, that seemed to solve the problem. I wasn't able to root mine successfully, so I don't know how turning the usb debug on and off affects the device. Since I wasn't having any luck with it, I uninstalled z4 and turned off usb debug permanently and haven't had any problems since.

your device has the exact usb vendor, product and bcd ids of the PD Novel, that's why calibre is detecting it as the PD Novel.

Mine was recognized as a 701 as soon as you put it in the update a couple of weeks ago. However, when I had USB debugging turned on while messing around with trying to root it, it was all of a sudden recognized as a Pandigital, and Calibre would not tell me what books in the library were on the device unless I transferred them again. Then as soon as I gave up on trying to root the durn thing and turned off USB debugging, everything went back to normal. It was recognized as a 701, and it told me what books were where on the device. So there seems to be something in the USB debugging (whatever that is) that messes with the communication with Calibre. As far as I know, USB debugging is only used when rooting the device, so if you don't root it, there is no need for the USB debugging, and no problem with Calibre. Mine isn't rooted, doesn't have USB debugging turned on, and works great.

So what is the solution to getting the 701 to work? It's not a cosmetic issue, when I transfer books to the SD card via calibre, they aren't actually transferred. The "/sdcard/ebooks" directory is created, but that's it.

Use the stock firmware and turn off USB debugging.

Just to be clear. There isn't any non stock firmware available for the Pocketbook 701.

The firmware it ships with would be considered the stock firmware. Anything (aside from version updates) that you install to either replace or modify what the device ships with is considered non stock.

Under that kind of a definition of "firmware", then it's not stock if you change the wallpaper. That's not a usable definition in any sense of the word, that's not even what firmware means.

I think that rooting the device would count as going non-stock. Doing so changes fundamental assumptions that the firmware writers made and tested. At least, if I were the firmware author, that would be the position I would take.

All rooting does is give you administrator type access. It doesn't change anything about the system other than elevate your permission level.

And the debug usb option is a setting built in to the operating system. It's a checkbox built-in to android. There is nothing "non-stock" about it. Like I said, it's no different than changing your wallpaper. (except changing the wallpaper is more complicated)

Anyway, I was only stating that there was no non-stock firmware involved so that anyone else reading this thread wouldn't become confused and spend time looking for some non-stock firmware which doesn't exist.

Generally, non stock, non standard, third pary modifications to devices will not be handled by calibre. The root you applied is such a case and will not be supported if the device does not interface with calibre properly.
As for the debigging mode causing the device to be detected incorrectly, there is nothing we can do about it. It is an issue with the device firmware you will need to take up with the manufactuer. In that mode the device is identifying itself as another device.
