Apple doesn't share well.

We're not talking about manufacturers we're talking about O/S Android vs iOS just like Windows vs Mac OS...

That is precisely the point - Android isn't a platform, it's several operating systems that are fragmenting due to hardware manufacturers/retailers (shock, horror ) trying to lock their customers into their version of an App Store etc...

Nor are we talking about platforms. (whatever you envision that to be)

Apple is the queen of attempting lock-in, that's why they don't share.

I'm not sure what tablet you're trying to view the Google Play Store from, but it certainly looks like a platform to me, and a pretty extensive one. Books, Music, Movies, Apps, Devices, Cloud Storage, integrated payment system...

Of the competing Android hardware manufacturers you mention, along with many others, all can access the Google platform. The one you could have mentioned which would have been a valid observation would have been Amazon, but even there, the other Android manufacturers can access Amazon's 'platform' as well.

I'll agree that it's still true that Apple's platform leads the way for integration and content, but to argue that Google doesn't have a significant platform seems to be over-egging the pudding.

Of course android is a platform -- in the truest, narrowest sense. It underlies all those devices. Samsung, HTC, and others merely put a software overlay over android.

In the broader sense, android is a platform as well. Because it's tied to Google apps and the Google app store, which by the way, are gaining ground on Apple very fast in terms of revenue:
Quote:
Google Play seems to be going on one heck of a growth spurt. According to new stats, the Android app store is catching up to iOS fast.

Even though the Apple App Store is four times more profitable than Google Play, iOS can't match Android's revenue growth of 311 percent since January and 17.9 percent in the last month.

In contrast, Apple's app revenue has increased only 12.9 percent this year and shrunk 0.7 percent in the last month ...

"The gap between global revenue on iOS and Google Play is still there," said Bertrand Schmitt, App Annie CEO, in a press release about the report.

"But the gap is shrinking every month, creating more opportunities for publishers to generate significant revenue growth in several countries on Google Play." ...

Since its debut, the Google Play store has put a few notches on the wall as well. In September, it hit the 25 billion downloads millstone. And in October, Google Play offered 700,000 app for download, matching the number of apps available for iOS.

Source
In the article, it also says android should surpass Apple in terms of tablet sales by mid-2013, according to one analyst.

So, google is definitely a platform. More fragmented and more open than Apple, but nonetheless a platform. And a very successful one at that.

The Google store now has 700,000 apps -- same number as iOS. A year ago, android was at 320,000 and iOS at 500,000. Now both have 700,000 so android's app growth is significantly more robust.

Seems like publishers/devlopers are recognizing where the real growth and profits are after all. They are flocking to android!

One of the most successful Android tablet lines, the Kindle Fire/HD/8.9 isn't tied to the Google app store, they have fragmented to a separate platform in the broader sense.
The same is true of the B&N Nook line, except for the successful part

The growth is clearly on the Android side. The profit is equally clearly on the Apple side.

It really not about 'numbers of apps' in any case, it's more about what they do, how good they are....

And yes, the 'mind-share' of developers is now in the Android camp.

Yes, this is true. One of the consequences of a free O/S on which to build. The danger here is in ending up like Linux as discussed above.

I do believe Google is attempting to address this in future releases though...

This is true. Perhaps it isn't an exact 1:1 equation in terms of lost Apple sales, but I would bet a majority of Android tablet sales represent a corresponding lost sale for an iOS tablets (or a lost iOS user via 2nd hand tablets). Which is why Jobs was so hot and bothered by all things android.

Yes, but Apple is losing ground in that battle too, according to the latest reports.

Revenue growth for android apps is significantly greater than it is for iOS.

I would bet that trend continues.

Yes, I know. And this makes android's much faster app revenue growth vs. iOS all the more remarkable, don't you think?

Kenny, this is so true. For example, android has long had a superior stable of reading apps to iOS. By far. I still don't understand why. But at any rate, that is more important for an avid reader than the sheer number of apps storewide.

However, from a marketing/sales perspective, it is important to be able to tout android as having just as many app options as iOS. Some consumers may be swayed by this.

Well, I always balk at saying anything is better just cause there is more or it has more variety. Yes, variety is important, but all that may mean is that there is more junk to sift through to find the gems. (not unlike the publishing world these days )
