REFURB ROOTABILITY

Just got my refurb.

serial 100023xxx firmware 1.4.3

I can't seem to find a solid answer anywhere on nookdevs or mobileread or anywhere else, to whether or not this is can be rooted and by which method.

From what I have read, to this point, I am assuming that :

- My nook has the older hardware with a microSD slot and card (although I have not looked) --- based upon the serial number... i dont think they change the serial number when they refurb

- firmware versions 1.4.1 and 1.4.2 were created for the newer soldered memory hardware and possess different drivers to talk to the new chip (post 1003xxx) --- based upon others bricking their nook by reverting to 1.0.0 stock ver

- firmware version 1.4.3 was created for the older microSD slot/card hardware, and includes other revisions that 1.4.1 and 1.4.2 have --- just a guess really..

- my nook is rootable by all methods, the hardware method of modifying the internal sd card with a linux box, the easy stock ver 1.0.0 softroot, and the router dns fakeout method --- hopefull

Has anyone proven these statements wrong?

With all the odd numbers and firmware showing up, I would only proceed after I opened the back to see that chip. Others with older numbers and 1.4.3 have been successful, but this is no guarantee.

All nooks are rootable via the 10031+ method for sure if they are below 1.5.0 firmware. There was a person that reported the the 10031+ method worked with a 1003X nook on 1.5.0 firmware.

I got my Overstock WiFi/3G refurb - 1.4.3 with 10003XXXX+ (older h/w). Advice to my questions are appreciated.

Should I update to 1.5 and then try to root it, or root it from 1.4.3 (which would disable any updates until the next root)? If so, what should I use to root - the USB direct method, or the Router approach?

My primary use would be to read pdf files (academic articles) - I have about 500+ of those neatly organized on my laptop (sub-sub-sub directory configuration). Nook 1.5 would handle pdf's but with no real usable functionality - zooming without reflow is critical for me. Nook 1.4.3 does not have the pdf functionality.

apdf would probably meet my needs, if I were to root it.

eInk is really amazing and I have been able to read for hours without getting tired. Moreover, the portability of the device might actually work out to be useful for me.

A few questions on that: 1) Following softroot's rooting, Nook will then be 1.4.0? Is there a way to get it to 1.5? 1.5 does support pdf, but 1.4.0 does not.

2) Step 8 of Softroot in Nookdev requires 'rebooting' again. I assume that it means turning off the power and turning it back on again, unless there is a soft boot that I am not aware of?

  1. After signed bravo update, you are at 1.0.0
  2. After bravo update (2.5.1) on external uSD card, you are at 1.5.0 If you used 2.4.1, you are at 1.4.3

Just power cycle.

Be prepared for a number of bugs yet to be addressed. The ADB over USB is not working with Android Commander, and NookLibrary will no longer view archived books anymore.

jmb, from where do I get the 2.5.1 bravo update and the corresponding keys? Softroot in RookDevs has 2.4.1:

"4. Download the NookDevs.com 2.4.1 (B&N:1.4.0) Softroot/ROM download

SHA1SUM: 78ebbc84dd544ce7b68525ea31dbfe2160f7808c
MD5SUM: 8db5cc7fde4ef1ec2d14136408b34c69".

Thanks - I wish the documentation on NookDevs was more current.

open it, look for microSD
if you find it, use the standard softroot method on nookdevs (revert to 1.0.0)
