Why no user file structure?

For me, the Kindle has one major disadvantage. No, I'm not talking about the price or the wait to get one, as I managed to justify both to myself: it's the lack of on-device file organization. I've had this thing for almost 3 weeks and have accumulated about 150 books. This means flipping through 13 pages of listings, sorted by author, title or most recent download (yes, I know you can search instead of flip).

What I'd like to be able to do, under "Books" is create subdirectories and organize my books (New, Old Favs-Mystery, Old Favs-SciFi, Old Favs-Historical, Old Favs-Lit, NF-Economics, NF-History, etc etc). I don't want to have to pull the books off the Kindle and store them on my hard drive, the point of having the device is to indulge myself by carrying a mini-library around with me.

The Kindle sorts by Book, Periodical, so it has some file structure, why not more? Is this the kind of thing that could be changed in a firmware/software update, or is there some larger underlying issue?

If you have a SD card then this provides another listing option (internal, SD, both).

I agree that directories would be best, but, based on what the Desktop MobiPocket Reader provides, what we may get is listing by Genre. This isn't nearly as useful.

I have a 2 gig SD card - I moved about 1/3 of my books onto it, hoping that was true, but the only way I can tell whether a book is on the SD card or in Kindle memory is to go to Content Manager and it'll tell me there - otherwise, when I look at "Books Only" I see all my books, no matter if they are on Kindle or on the SD. My Kindle is the 1.0.4 version, maybe this is a change?

I keep a .prc file with all my books categorized the way I want on my Kindle. I can't go directly to the book but at least I can make note of the title and then go to it manually.
