n516 - how long to erase flash

Just purchased a Hanvon n516. STILL no epub support.

Hanvon website is hopeless for firmware updates.

Grabbed the german version..... N516 hangs on menu screen with light on (for 1 hour).

So.. Decided to take the plunge into open inkspot instead.

Using azooka usbboot, I've just entered the nerase command.

It now says:

Erasing No.0 device No.0 flash......

(six dots). how long is this step supposed to take?

Hmmm an in hindsight how long should I have waited for the german firmware to fire up?

interestingly the page:

http://openinkpot.org/wiki/Device/N5...iginalFirmware

has three attachments: rootfs.cfg, uImage.cfg and USBBoot.cfg. They all contain the same information!!!!

Hi Beebeeee,

you can try the woxter firmware, it supports epub with drm and has many more features than the hanvon firmware.

I have uploaded it here, because the original download is actually corrupt:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4909500/Firm...aV.2.5.3.2.rar

here is the original homepage, but the 2.6 download is corrupt at the moment.

(use google translation from spanish->english)

Hanvon updated firmware with epub support:

But if you don't need DRM support Inkpot is a lot better. If you can, try doing it on a different computer. I think the failures are due to underpowered USB ports, but that is just a guess.

the version mr ploppy published is rather old..

the last 2.2x version was 2.2.9 (on woxter page)

the last official version found is 2.5.3.2 (the dropbox link two posts above, from woxter)
this version is much better than any 2.2x version. Much more customizable than the older versions and of course epub with drm.

I run a midi, 4 in/4 out ASIO USB sound system and an Evolution midi (music 4 octaves) keyboard on my USB ports that need plenty of power, so I do not think I am underpowered.

I tried it a few times and eventually it took about 15 seconds to erase!

After a few attempts the flash worked (about 10 bad blocks in the firmware). the n516 behaved oddly after the first couple of flashes. The 3rd one nailed it.

open inkpot is now working.

Books that I am interested in (in any format) are basically non-existant in DRM land.

Currently my wife's cooking recipes get used the most!

Thanks for the links.. I'll play when I feel I can risk bricking it again.

Hi Hammy,

actually I would recommend the openinkpot project. I have updated my hanvon to the actual daily build of openinkpot and it is faster than ever.

The only drawback for some people could be the missing DRM capability, but no problem for me...
