Done in software, but the screen size is the problem as it's too small to display a lot of PDFs.

If Amazon did that, others could come up with software for reading other formats and then that would mean that you would not be stuck with Amazon for DRMed content. That would be against Amazon's best interest even though that isn't in our best interest.

Actually, if you take the 9.7" screen and crop off the margins of most PDF, it should be pretty good for displaying most letter sized PDF as a lot of them have huge margins.

It depends on what capabilities Amazon opens up through the API. They could also implement an approval process for apps along the lines of what Apple does for the iPhone.

It helps that your filing system has to please only yourself :-) The file-by-topic unorganized system would have been tough for me, as a paper could be about protein 1's a) structure and b)biochemistry but also the first reference for method Z, so I would be wondering where to file it. Hence the one big box sorted by name method. Quote:
The downside, alas, is when you lose university status, you can't access anything anymore, whereas you used to be able to look at the paper journals the same as before; you just couldn't check anything out. Yeah, the Kindle isn't there. There's *got* to be a market for this kind of thing. I know I'm not the only one. |

KDX has automatic zoom to cut off the white space. So a portrait view would be pretty close to 100% on a document with ordinary margins, and if you need to, you turn it landscape and view things half a page at a time.

http://blogs.adobe.com/billmccoy/200..._others_l.html It is tragic that, having integrated the Adobe Reader Mobile SDK, they have chosen not to support ePub and ACS4 at the same time. Perhaps there is some technical reason for this (their server infrastructure might need more time to accommodate it...), but since Amazon didn't take the opportunity now to say that they are working on this part, one has to assume the reasons are not technical. |

We know why Amazon did not go with ACS4 and ePub. It's called CONTROL. Amazon wants to keep control of all DRMed content.

Well, technically they want to keep control of where people buy their DRMed content, I doubt they really care what we do with it afterward, and if we actually read it or not.

One interesting property of ADE that the DX uses, but which is a much requested upgrade for the Sony Readers, is the clipping of PDF margins. The DX does this by default, but the Sony Reader's portrait mode leaves the margins intact (I'm not sure about their landscape mode). This means that Bookeen and other new ADE licensees have no excuses for leaving the margins unclipped. |

But hey, if they did add pdf annotation, that would be great and I'd probably buy one on the spot. |

Damn it, I can't resist! The refresh rate, battery life and the ability to read Topaz files make it too good to pass up.
EDIT: Put my order in. I figure its best to reserve my place in the queue and I can cancel the order if I change my mind. Last edited by RobbieClarken; 05-06-2009 at 09:06 PM. |
