Hogan will be missed.

I enjoyed his "Giants" series, and really loved his novella "Out of Time".

A great creative imagination.

Damned shame. Mr. Hogan was one of my favourite "hard SF" authors.

Sadly, I have mixed feelings.

Hogan is one of those authors who I liked their books, but violently disagreed with their personal beliefs.

A creative person who provided much enjoyment has died.
What is there *not* to mourn?
Mixed feelings??
Sorry but politics are not *that* important.

Besides, curmudgeons old and young are vital to any free society.
The day we stop questioning authority and stop demanding clear justifications for policy is the day they can write *our* epitaph as a civilization.

No more Hogan books matters.
The rest? Hot air on all sides.

Ummm, I guess you did not read the link.

It had nothing to do with politics. He was a Holocaust denier

That's not entirely true. What the article actually says is:

Quote:
he finds the work of Arthur Butz and Mark Weber to be "more scholarly, scientific, and convincing than what the history written by the victors says." While such theories were seen by many to contradict his views on scientific rationality, he repeatedly stated that these theories hold his attention due to the high quality of their presentation - a quality he believes established sources should attempt to emulate, but have instead resorted to attacking their originators. [citation needed] As such, they are consistent with the view that scientific theories should not be accepted simply because they are widely held.
In other words, he's saying that if you want to discredit someone's views, do it by presenting your own viewpoint better than your opponents are doing, not by merely attacking them.

The article also says
Quote:
In March 2010, in an essay defending Holocaust denier Ernst Zündel, Hogan stated that the mainstream history of the Holocaust includes "claims that are wildly fantastic, mutually contradictory, and defy common sense and often physical possibility."
Hogan was also skeptical about climate change, ozone depletion, and does not believe that the HIV virus causes AIDS. He was proponent of the insane "theories" of Immanuel Velikovsky.

In any event, my disagreements with Hogan have nothing to do with politics.

I didn't agree with some of his personal opinions either, but they were just that - his personal opinions, which he was perfectly entitled to hold, regardless of what you or I might think. It doesn't make him a "bad person", and at the end of the day it's his books that are his legacy, not his opinions on climate change or WWII. I'm extremely sorry to hear of his death; he was one of the "greats" of SF.
