The Talent Killers

Here's an interesting (if altogether skewed) blog posting on the role of the literary agent in the book writing process.

http://maryww.wordpress.com/2009/04/...-to-stop-them/

There's been a lot of anger in the publishing world over the recent #queryfail on Twitter, which led to the #agentfail responses not long after by unpublished writers. Are we seeing the 10 percenters losing their respect and cache because of the digital age? That's up to you to decide.

Very interesting--and terribly sad. Check it out if you want to hear a writer rage against reality. Reminds me of the difference between the psychotic and the neurotic. The psychotic thinks that two and two are five. The neurotic knows that two and two are four--but can't stand it.

But you'll find the corrective in the emminently sane comments after this wrong-headed post. Click and look it over.

A lot has changed in "the gentleman's profession" since I was a publisher (Cobble Hill Press--distributed by Hill and Wang) But agents (read villains) serve a much-needed economic function today.

No doubt new publishing models are in the making. How they will develop, no one knows. But--right now--I like e-books. And that's what I write.

Her book is called "The All Clove Diet" but it's not a cookbook. The first few pages of the novel are not particularly grabbing. If she'd change those two things I'm sure she'd really improve her chances.
