Diesel eBooks President on need for standards

Scott Redford, president of Diesel eBooks and a loyal visitor of MR, speaks out on the need for standards in DRM technology and e-book formats. I fully agree with Scott. There should be only one e-book standard that is well-supported and works well with any e-book reader device. Most importantly, the standard shouldn't restrict ("digital restriction management") the e-reading experience of the paying customer in any way .

Scott, feel free to express your thoughts here as well; we are a very open-minded community and love to hear the opinion of "professionals". I am sure this could lead to some interesting and rewarding discussions!

Especially since many of us have businesses dedicated to the production and distribution of high-quality eBooks for our readers and reader-communities. Its good to get a fresh perspective on the issues from the "other side".

The problem with creating a standard DRM is that it will actually take work. It has to be an open format so that 3rd party groups can build eBooks. It can't be like DVD CSS that can be cracked by a teenager.

Also, the eBook publishers need to create a way to transfer ownership of an eBook. If they can't, they need to get used to the market price being about $0.50 for an eBook.
