kepub files not appearing anywhere
Recently I downloaded the Kobo desktop app and made only two Japanese ebook purchases (and two freebies) on the Japanese Kobo store. From what I've read here on Mobile Read, I know where the downloaded kepub files are supposed to appear on the PC (BTW I don't own any ereaders).
My problem is that when I purchased the ebooks on the Desktop app, the only files I see on Documents/MyDigitalEditions...are nothing. No kepub or epub or even a pdf file. And when I checked out C:/Users/[Name]/AppData/Local/Kobo/KobDesktopEdition/kepub, there are only blank files that can't be opened with any program or software; Calibre won't even accept them (oh, this also includes the free ebooks). I can however perfectly view the books on the desktop app. So when I checked out my library on the Japanese Kobo website it turns out that only the free ebooks are Adobe DRM epub (of which I then opened it with ADE with success) but the other two are left blank with no specification of what their formats are. I've deleted one ebook (a purchased one), found it on my Purchased list on the Kobo website, bookmarked it and synced my account from the desktop app to have it downloaded again, but the kepub file still didn't appear, only the blank file. Could someone help me figure this out and view them as epub files on my PC? I'm completely new in the world of ereading so please tell me in full details of what I did wrong here or what I'm not understanding. PS I run on Windows. Only ePubs purchased and downloaded via Adobe Digital Edition appear within the "My Digital Editions" folder.
Kobo Desktop maintains it's own store of kepubs it has downloaded within the Appdata tree of your Windows account; mine is at C:\Users\Peter\AppData\Local\Kobo\Kobo Desktop Edition\kepub These files are however encrypted by Kobo's own scheme, and are also named with UUID type names (in my case Code:
Directory of C:\Users\Peter\AppData\Local\Kobo\Kobo Desktop Edition\kepu 25/08/2014 21:33 <DIR> . 25/08/2014 21:33 <DIR> .. 27/07/2014 19:15 732,913 0ee44cf7-e192-4f5c-a84a-f719e93eb038 15/08/2014 23:03 5,901,364 2a89c344-38d2-4968-a66c-64d9995787ee 15/08/2014 23:03 12,162,967 c4b99f83-944f-4ef4-a953-a7a758ffeead |

Oh, wow. This already looks complicating. So how can I have them accepted to Calibre? Is there a way around this?
PS I appreciate for your insanely fast reply you just gave. Much appreciated. |

Unfortunately there is no straightforward means to add books downloaded via Kobo Desktop to calibre due to the DRM present in the files.
Due to forum rules, we can't discuss HOW to remove DRM; all we can do is suggest you Google for "Apprentice Alf" and see what you find. Additionally, what Alf suggests by default points to ePub format and NOT kEpub format. You can ask Alf though for guidance. |
