You'd think I would be used to how close these votes get now that we have multiple choice, but I'm surprised every time.

I suppose that when there are so many excellent choices there's bound to be a very competitive poll. Personally, I'm glad to see The Giver up there in contention.

There are indeed many good choices. I tend to read 3 or 4 from each selection each month, many votes or not, and put the rest on my TBR list. And sometimes, even though I frown upon a book, the winner is surprisingly good, as the Big Sleep of Chandler was. |

The June vote is now history in more ways than one. The Swerve: How the World Became Modern by Stephen Greenblatt is our winner, and should make for a lively discussion.
Happy reading! |

Congrats non-fictionites. I hope this makes up a bit for the travel/adventure result earlier in the year.

I've started reading the book, and for what it's worth, despite the impression given earlier in this thread via his critic, Harold Kirkpatrick, the author does not appear to be claiming that Lucucius' book was the sole cause of the enlightenment. From The Swerve: How the World Became Modern by Stephen Greenblatt, location 185-187:

As for any further comments or spoilers concerning The Swerve, I'll wait until the official discussion begins on June 20th. |

Well I am glad that The Swerve edged out The Giver. The result of all the discussion of the part that On the Nature of Things by Lucretius plays in The Swerve has convinced me that it would be worthwhile to tackle Lucretius first. The happens to be the translation into English by John Selby Watson available in audio format for free download here at LibriVox:

I'm glad too. Thanks for the LibriVox link, Hamlet.
And thanks for your introductory comments too, Tom. I have borrowed my husband's copy and am about to start it. |
