Well, this information is only as good as the source, and I suppose B&N could be telling their people a tale, but the official story is that they had a large run of bad cases and, as such, they had to refurbish these otherwise new units with new cases to repair the cosmetic problems. This explains the units with brand new firmware, the full warranty, the selling through multiple re-sellers, and the many reports that these items are new.

So, when they are gone, they are gone and I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a price drop. A % off coupon just released specifically will not work on any Nook

I was kind of hoping they were getting ready to release an e-ink nook 2, but that was just wishful thinking. I think with the focus on nook colour, there won't be a new nook for a long time now.

Thanks for posting this. I just bought a nook refurb last week from the B&N website (and then saw it for even less at buy.com -- oh well!) and wondered why there were so many floating around.

A bunch of "refurbished" Kindles showed up right before the Kindle 3 launched. It's probably the same thing. They are perhaps expecting the Nook Color to take a bunch of the Nook sales.

Hmmm...I wonder if the "bad cases" are related to the cracks people had been reported. I was just reading in the b&n forums people reporting returning 3 or more units because of cracks. Mine sure looks new, but the s/n suggests it's older.

The "bad case" thing is looking really weird now as I have seen reports of people receiving a 1.4.1 firmware, meaning it is a unit about 2 months old. i just got a 3G unit, looks perfect, but it had the old style buttons as well as a 1000 serial which is quite old. I am pleased as I was resigned to a newer non-rootable 1.4.1 but their statement about a "shipment with bad cases" won't hold up unless they have old and new units mixed in this batch of refurbs. In any case, mine still has the older defective buttons. On the plus side, I can modify that and when softrooted, I almost never need the buttons.

Guess we can't tell what we will get when we buy these.
