Hebrew Bible:Jewish Publication Society 1917 Text v 1.0 01Nov07
Everyone,
Attached are the five books of the Hebrew Bible in English, plus the Book of Joshua (for now). The text is the 1917 translation by the Jewish Publication Society. The source for the text was found at the Mechn-Mamre web site: http://www.mechon-mamre.org/e/et/et0.htm. The LRF file was created by converting the html to text, then using pielrf version 2.1.3. The "chapters" found in the Torah TOC reflect the weekly parashot (readings), and the paragraph breaks within the parashot are the bible chapters. For Joshua (and all subsequent books), the TOC is broken down simply by chapter. I believe this creates manageable size files with logical breaks for the TOC. This translation is the most recent JPS version not in copyright (the most recent JPS translation was created in 1985, in a more modern English). Perhaps a topic of future discussion should be whether the Bible (in its various forms and translations) is correctly assumed to be in the public domain. Comments and suggestions on the created files are appreciated and will be considered in future versions. Regards, Yaakov |

Thanks Yaacov, was looking for something like this. It's a shame none of the retailers have gotten any of the more recent translations working. Heck, you can get the Oxford Jewish Study Bible on palm!

Yaakov, The materials provided on this page, https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15708 are taken without permission from our copyrighted materials on the site http://www.mechon-mamre.org/e/et/et0.htm While the original underlying text was and is public domain (you may make your own edition based on that original JPS 1917 version), this version is NOT public domain and should be removed immediately. We allow conversion of our materials for your private use only, not for redistribution. Shelomo, the Webmaster for http://www.mechon-mamre.org/ |

Spiritual Hebrew Bible:Jewish Publication Society 1917 Text v 1.0 01Nov07
My sincere apologies.
Moderators, please remove this text from the website. I will attempt to find another source (or start typing it out from the original public domain text myself). Ya'akov |

Yaakov, I suggest that you contact Larry Nelson (P.O. Box 1681, Cathedral City, CA 92234 USA, nelsonlarry@juno.com) for permission to use the electronic copy he has prepared of the JPS 1917 version. As long as the use is not commercial, I think he would be happy to give you permission, just as he gave us permission for our site. |

I see no reason why we can't host the files. Just to be on the safe side I suggested to Yaakov that he remove the punctuation before reposting the files. |

So far as I know, I am under no obligation as copyright holder to deliniate what is added and what is not. You may copy from the Public Domain original, but you have no inherent right to copy from my copyrighted version. I still insist that the copyrighted materials be deleted from this site, and Yaakov who provided them to the site has also asked for their removal. So they should be removed, and that is that! |

What Nate is saying, though, is that if you made additions (eg adding punctuation) to texts which are in the public domain, then it is only your additions which you can claim "copyright" on, not the original text. If someone removes the material that you've added, therefore, what's left is public domain material which can be freely redistributed. |

It's the hebrew bible! It's a shame that one has to think in terms of "copyrights" regarding such contents.

This is a somewhat different situation to the "usual" bible copyright issues. Most modern translations of the bible are under copyright simply because they are modern translations, and a translation receives its own copyright which is independent of the copyright status of the material being translated.
In this case, however, we have a 1917 translation which is in the public domain, to which someone has added additional material. It is only that additional material which is therefore copyrighted; the original text remains in the public domain. If, therefore, the additional material is removed from the files, then they can perfectly legitimately be reposted, because the material is in the public domain. |

Attitude not unusual
This attitude among copyright holders is not unusual.
There is a book, Berlin Embassy, published in 1941, and whose copyright was not renewed in 1969. I can't find when the author, a clerk in the embassy, died. I look on Amazon and there is it with a copyright notice! Apparently it is for a commentary which is added and for the cover because the contents can not be under copyright! |

That's not at all uncommon. If you look at any of the "classics", they generally have some sort of introductory essay and notes. Those are copyrighted;the actual text isn't. Nothing to do with anyone's "attitude" - those really are the things which are copyrighted!
