Problem with character in mobi-conversion

I have an original text which doesn't use the character ' ( don't know the english word for this) but when converting to either mobi or txt format it produces a questionmark in places where the ' should have been used when reading the text on my Kindle 3. When reading the converted text in Calibre it looks perfectly normal. Anyone who has experienced the same problem and have found a solution?

The ? Normally means that the character in question does not exist in the font being used by the reader. It could be that when you look at it using the calibre viewer then the character does exist in the font file on your PC.

The commonest cause of this is where so-called smart-quotes are used in the source file as these smart-quote characters are outside the normal ASCII character set and thus may well not exist on the target device. Getting the correct character encoding specified can fix this issue, as can the calibre option to handle smart-quotes at conversion time (by converting them to normal quotes).

Actually when looking at it in the Calibre reader the character is just omitted, writing "shouldnt" in stead of "shouldn't".
I've tried to use different settings related in the "Look & Feel" section when converting with no luck so far.

If you turn on the debug option while doing a conversion then you can get the HTML at various stages of the conversion pipeline. That should allow you to examine the problem in more detail to see just what happens to these characters during conversion.

Is this "original text" in html?

If it is html then check step 2 of this part of the FAQ.
